Materials needed

Does anyone know where I can get fibreglass rod in lengths greater than 1m? I need some for a couple of projects and cattle-prods aren’t quite long enough.

I also need thick leather suitable for making LARP armour, specifically greaves and bracers. Doesn’t have to be big pieces either as I’ll be looking at some more piecemeal type stuff.

Try here

Legendary - cheers dude

After much research, I can conclusively say that the best place for fibreglass rods for them diy projects is;

RD1 Albany
12 Oteha Valley Road Extension
09 415 9776

The store is managed by the very helpful Leslie, and if they don’t have exactly what you want, they can usually get it within a few days (and it’s worth ringing first, just to be sure).

Rods in 8mm/10mm thicknesses, 1m/1.2m/1.5m lengths. As an indicator, a 10mm 1.5m long rod is only $6.49 including GST

If they ask if Dave sent you, say yes and let me know - if we can build a good rapport and rep with them we can apply for a trade type scenario and maybe get them even cheaper

Wow mega goodness - I was just about to post a similar question…

Does anyone know where to get fiberglass flats. I’m after something like 8x2mm or 10x3mm sections in at least 1m lengths.

I’d like to try doing curved blades by laminating together 3-4 layers of fiberglass into a bent shape.

Talk to Mike Curtis about sail battens

I know about sail battens as they used to be my bread and butter of larp sword cores.

What I want to do is laminate cores (like long thin bits of plywood).

I found them not long after you rang them - they even asked me if I was the Dave that had rung about fibreglass rods. My research consisted of deciding that there should really be a farming supplies store somewhere in Albany (where I work), so I drove down the road until I saw a likely looking store, which happened to be RD1.

For sail battens, you can try Gourock in Avondale. 4m of longsword batten is about $20.

Derek, for curved blades we have had success with thick PVC pipe that is flattened (by heating over a flame and compressing), and curved into the correct shape. You need thick pipe for horizontal integrity.

Been there, done that, bought the T shirt.

Now I want to try fiberglass laminates

No rush. Won’t need them 'til I die in November :open_mouth:
