Masquerade on Fleet Street

Last night, at Battlecry, I ran my first ever theatreform game, a gothic melodrama inspired by the movie Sweeney Todd, as well as a good dozen or so other bits of gothic media. It was written for 40 people and we ended up playing with 34, some of the missing roles being filled by NPC bit parts, but despite this, some of the missing characters could really be felt in some plots (mostly the portrait-painter plot and the bandit plot.) I also regret that there wasn’t enough time to actually set up the lights and turn off the main ones to give it a more shadowy, darker atmosphere, because I think that would have helped a bit too.

Despite these things, from a writer point of view, it seemed to go pretty well. I had a few unexpected curveball directions from players and at one stage, very late in the game, I went back my little GM cubby room and said “Man, I got no idea what that game out there is anymore, I’m not sure where half the stuff they’re asking me about has come from.” Everybody looked really good and there were, from where I was standing which was outside the game a lot, there were no major hiccups. I did manage to catch a couple of cool scenes, such as when Alexander Drake called out Prince Stefan and told him to leave his woman alone, as well as the punchup between The Highwayman and Chief Utterson, as well as one of the major villians accomplishing his major goal in the first fifteen minutes through sheer dumb luck.

I’m hoping to write up a debrief, including things like what inspirations and references I used, since the game was riddled with characters and situations based off gothic literature (Withering Mews Manor, anyone?) but I’m really keen to hear what the players thought, what they liked and what feedback they can give, so I can tweak the game accordingly and hopefully run it again in maybe a few years, or take it down to Wellingto and try to run it there. I had an enormous amount of fun with making this game, so I’d like to make it the best possible. Also, like I said, I missed most of the game by sitting in a room answering questions and sending in NPCs, so I also want to hear funny stories, dramatic moments, and who was really awesome at their roleplaying.

Thanks again to everyone who came and got all dressed up, I promise on behalf of my sister, our lovely photographer, that the photos will be up probably before the weekend is out.

Hoorah! Photos!
Has taken me bit longer than usual to get them edited, sorted and uploaded. Bare with me, I am yet to invest in a proper flash attachment so struggled at bit in the low light conditions which is visible in some of the pictures. Hopefully have removed most of the red eye though. It is also a tad annoying how the photos look like they were taken in a school gym, (perhaps because they were) but at least we managed to dress it up a bit which worked quite well in the backgrond.

Hope I wasn’t too obtrusive with what flash I was using and I aimed to get as fair coverage of everyone but I apologize if there aren’t as many photos of some people as others. I also want to say thanks to everyone for the awesome night. =)

Without further ado! -----> Clicky here!
Still to come are the portraits which still require a bit of tweaking but hopefully I should have those up by the end of the weekend. As usual, if anyone wants higher resolution versions of any photos or a CD with all the photos, just let me know and we’ll arrange it.

Enjoy. =)

Thanks Judit! I really appreciate you coming along to take photos all night. Your photos look really good and I’m looking forward to seeing the portraits and the group shot from the end! (I suspect that will be my new desktop background)

Yay, portraits! My first ever go at doing portraits so again, bare with me. Getting a decent background and again lighting was the tricky bit and some people were a little too tall for the background but that’s what we have Photoshop for…hope my tinkering isn’t too blatantly obvious.

Also, let me know if you would be interested in prints as if there is enough interest, I can arrange it easily.

Hope you all like. ----> Clicky!

I honestly can’t remember much of it (with that whole rest of the convention in between and all :stuck_out_tongue:), but I did really like my character’s dead body being used to resurrect another character. Just a shame the game was called to a finish while the ritual was still being performed…

How is it that I looked at this thread all this time and completely failed to register that this was a chance to dress up in a fancy ballgown and mask.

I am an idiot.

Looks like it was fun.

I really enjoyed writing this game and given that it is (essentially) complete, I was considering doing a rerun in Auckland, and then maybe running it down in Wellington.

Would there be interest from people who didn’t attend it at Battlecry to attend a (tweaked) rerun?

(This was a huge effort to write. I’m going to get as much mileage as possible)

Oh goody; I was just thinking that if there is no May LARP this year (and there hasn’t been for several years, though there are suggestions that there might be this year) then someone could always beg a copy of this and run it instead. Having the author actually come down and run it would be even better.

WARGS or KapCon may be able to provide front-money for a Wellington event if NZLARPs can’t, though they’d want to see a credible financial plan.

I would LOVE to attend a tweaked rerun.

puts hand up and then runs off to rummage in wardrobe, muttering about creating masks and Spotlight shopping trips…

I’ll be there! No way would I miss that.

nzLARPS should be okay for the cash but it’s good to know there’s options if they’re not. I will need help in finding a venue for it, though, but that’s pretty much all. I can’t come down to run it in May (I’m running Wolfgang that month) but would somewhere between Chimera and KapCon work for the Wellington calendar?

To the Aucklanders, I’m considering doing a rerun in maybe late June/early July, if there is sufficient interest. I would actually like to get the full 40 PCs for it.

I suppose finding 40 PCs who didn’t already play it is going to be a bit of an ask?

I reckon if we put our minds to it we could find forty people who haven’t played. Just a matter of advertising and pitching it right…scheme

Fright Night is smack bang in the middle of it, somewhere around halloween, but apart from that you’re clear.

Fright Night is the Halloween-y sort of con, yeah? So would that be end of October?

Maybe I could try for late September…?

Yes. And given that Halloween is a Saturday this year, avoid that date.

That would fit.

That would fit.

I hear that Turnbull House is the place for holding larps. Can you tell me what sort of capacity it has and how much it costs?

The costumes look awesome. Love Sridat’s hat.

Here.

WARGS can get you community rates; I’m doing “Serpent of Ash” in the Small Gallery there tonight.
