Looking Pretty, Feeling Warm - The Technical Discussion

Not too long ago, this question was asked:

and it was answered like this:

Now I have a new question. Making it out of wool, I get. Covering the head, I get. What I don’t get is covering the kidneys. Why them? Why not some other internal organ, like the heart or the liver?

Derek-sensei, please elucidate!

I don’t know why the kidneys, but that is what I was taught as a boy scout.

I’m going to assume that theres alot of blood going through them and they are close to the surface…so act like fluid heat exchange devices…

But I dont know about the anatomy of it…just a guess

I’m not sure why it’s the case but its true. I get colder if my lower back and midriff aren’t covered.

And I think if you get kidney chill your bladder stops working as well, too. Maybe that’s just a rumour that I remembered wrong.

I do remember that Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonrider books were always going on about kidney chill.

It also might be that the kidneys are closer to the skin than the liver and heart, so losing temperature is more of an issue for them.

Thank you.

From a vaguely medical perspective - yes to everyone above. Kidneys are closer to the skin (though surrounded by fat), and your entire quantity of blood passes through them every 6 minutes.
Your bladder doesn’t ‘stop working’ if you get kidney chill, it’s really just a stretchable sack for holding fluid - but your kidneys don’t work properly which is always all bad.
