Would definitely be worthwhile inviting the living history folks along to Camelot.
From what I saw at the one NAAMA I’ve been to Wellington has some awesome reenactment/SCA folk, and that setting may suit them perfectly.
Yes, I agree. When you have a solid date, time, place, cost, who to book with, etc, for Black Hart of Camelot, please let me know, and I’ll pass it on to the local SCA and Medieval Living History (MLH) mailing lists, etc.
There are a lot of gamers (of various sorts) in the SCA. We are surely target market for LARP.
And SCA can have a certain LARP aspect to it (see my 1997 article darton.sca.org.nz/d.php/Persona+Collegium.pdf), particularly courts, quests and some forms of tournaments. But, to make a shamelessly bold generalisation, LARP is theatre first props second, SCA is props first theatre second.
Indeed, when I was originally involved with LARP in Auckland in the early 1990’s, Derek and I (amongst several others) started the SCA group in Auckland partly as a reaction against the then underwhelmingly poor state of typical LARP clothing, i.e. a raggedy tabard over track suit and sneakers. (If you were lucky.)
(Some of the various martial arts practiced by SCAdians are also significantly more robust than no-head-shot boffer weapon combat, but let’s not complicate matters.)
Having seen the 20/20 article and Derek’s cheesy grin all over the LARP homepage, I figured I would like to attend some Wellington LARPS:
(i) to do some fun LARPing if and when I can fit it into my busy schedule.
(ii) to foster intergroup cross-pollination, i.e. see if there are any other SCAdians who would like to do some LARPing, see if there are any LARPers who would like to attending some SCA events.
I’ve been lucky enough to have dabbled with both. I recommend it.
Cheers
Alistair aka Stefano
P.S. A broad disclaimer to forestall concerns about ‘poaching’: Personally, I’m much too much of a ‘live free or die trying’ kind of person to set out to do anything like that. I can’t say the same for others, alas. SCA can be an all consuming hobby, and it is fair to say some people lose perspective on occasion. (I rather expect LARP is same?
) In any case, I prefer to think cross-pollination will enrich both groups to the detriment of neither. Besides which, SCA is only a doing medieval stuff club. I know plenty of SCAdians who also dabble in other eras, or steampunk or cyberpunk, etc, just waiting for the right LARP game to be offered to them from time to time.
