Leather - For Sale

I have managed to pick up another large pile of leather in various shades of brown and black. I have these for sale for very reasonable prices.

Most of the pieces are 2-3 square feet in size, big enough to get a pair of vambraces or a single greave out of. Some are bigger, some smaller, some light (2mm) some heavy (3-4mm).

People are welcome to come out and purchase small quantities or I will post larger quantities ($150+) for the cost of shipping.

The leather is roughly $5-7 per square foot

Could I have enough brown leather to make a pair of shoes with?

Top row - left to right light leather suitable for shoes and pouches:

1 - light brown soft 2mm leather ideal for turn shoes/pouches

2 - burgundy brown soft 2mm leather ideal for turn shoes/pouches

3 - dark brown stiffer 2mm leather ideal for armour straps or costume/larp vambraces

4 - black soft 2mm leather ideal for turn shoes/pouches

Bottom row - left to right heavy leather suitable for armour:

5 - light brown softer 3-5mm leather - embosses and decorates well (it isn’t a ‘russet’ or ‘tool’ leather though) - less dense/softer than 6 and 7 below because it hasn’t been through the same rollers to press it

6 - dark brown 3-4mm heavy leather - ideal for SCA armour - hardens well in boiling wax and this is what I use for armour that needs to actually be protective (this is the most expensive leather I have).

7 - black stiff 3-4mm leather for larp armour - I’ve had mixed success hardening this leather in boiling wax

This isn’t all the colours I have, but I have reasonable quantities of most of these leathers. I have another heavy leather similar to 5 but heavy and stiffer. It’s in longish strips that want to be made into a Roman style lorica segmentata…

You may have enough for 10 pairs of turn shoes if you wish…

If there are any groups who want to purchase in bulk, let me know what you’re after and I’ll put together a big pile for you. $250 will get a reasonable size pile of leather. The Auckland Sword and Shield club got a big pile through me a few years back and I think they still have some floating around.

$250 will get enough leather to make vambraces, shoes, belts and scabbard for 10 people.

You may have enough for 10 pairs of turn shoes if you wish…[/quote]But I only want one pair…
The burgundy brown please. And if there’s a bit suitable for making a belt out of, I’d like some too.

Thankee!

PS: I’m just starting to dip my toes into this leather working thing. If you should happen to know of good instructions for shoe making that are hard to muck up by a beginner, that would, um, be really helpful.

PPS: I can pass this on to some of the Wellington clubs. Would you like me to?

Okay. I don’t have any in a belt weight or length the in burgundy/brown colour. I have medium brown. It’s heavy leather and about 110-120cm long. One piece should get 2-4 belts depending on how wide you want to cut them.

The best book for shoe making is the Museum of London Shoes and Patterns book. Several people in the Wellington clubs will have copies if you don’t.

I’m not fussed either way. If they want to purchase a pile of leather I’m happy to provide it. I’m mostly doing it as a public service for the people I see at games rather than wanting to spend lots of time posting stuff. I gave the Wellington Sword and Shield club a big pile of leather a few years back for stuff all money, so they know what the quality is like. It will be costing more this time though

Steph, are you in Auckland at the moment?

I will be at Nixon Park, Central Rd, Kingsland this evening (Tuesday) for SCA training from about 6:30 with a boot load of leather if people want to come and purchase some. About $5-$7 per square foot. Discounts if you purchase large amounts.

Cheers!

I’ve sold lots of leather so far, and still have lots left. I think most people are surprised at how much they get for their money and once they find out how little it costs, they usually grab lots more

I’ve just done up this quote for someone and I thought I’d see if anyone else was interested. The leather cost for this is about 50% of the total cost (the rest is for pattern making, labour and extra materials). I can probably manage medium sized people but very large ones I may not have big enough pieces of leather.

You will need a hammer, some light nails (to punch holes) and a block of wood to assemble this leather surcoat. The leather is medium weight (think boot leather).

This makes ideal larp armour and would make an ideal foundation garment for turning into a coat of plates for steel / SCA combat by the addition of internal steel / cuirboilli plates. For $10 extra I can provide 100 two part rivets for attaching plates or just “faking” the rivet pattern for larp armour.

This will make a solid garment that will last for years of abuse!!!

Please, let my know if you you are interested in this or other leather armour.

If any of the people at the End Of An Era party are still interested in leather when they sober up, they can phone me on 021 0228 3640 to figure out when they’ll come around. Wednesday is probably good.

Are you by any chance coming down for the Quest game on Friday?

I haven’t planned to. However, my armour is in Hamilton at the moment and I have to go pick it up some time soon…

Change that to “about 50/50”. If I do, I will bring lots of leather for sale.

excellent!
If you can drop me a line when you know when you are coming I will try to get notification out to all interested parties in Hamilton.
Although I will not be around 2-4 March.

thanks.

Umm, isn’t the Quest game on the 23rd of Feb, not 2-4 March???

ah yes, but that was before I knew what week you were maybe coming to Hamilton. Excuse me if I am abit vague today; I am working at same time as I am in here.
