Hey All,
This question is more out of interest than me actually wanting to do it. How hard is it to put on and set up a latex mask? re they a one time wear thing? Would they last a weekend LARP?

Foam latex prosthetics are made to be used more than once, though how many times depends on quality and the care you take of it (especially when removing it, since most of them are glued on with ProsAid, a prosthetic glue)
I can’t tell from the pic if that is a whole head mask or just a facial prosthetic, either way, if you want to be able to use expressions, you’ll need to fix the mask to your face, forehead, around the eyes, nose and around the mouth.
If at all possible, I’d recommend one that doesn’t cover your head, it allows your scalp to breathe and you won’t get as soggy.
Prosthetics also don’t come painted, as a rule. You’ll have to do that yourself.
Good fun.
I wore one for Knightshade -
If you’re prone to sweating, don’t bother. I enjoyed wearing mine, but eating was a mission. I’m seriously considering cutting off the bottom half of the mouth, to make it more bearable. Depending on what you’re after, I would consider a simple piece to start with, or a half mask. Wear it for a day game or something short. If you cope, try it for a full weekend.
I was looking at the enlarged pic, and i’m pretty sure that mask is forehead to top lip. I doubt the ears are part of it, since they sell orc ears seperately. Chris is right, don’t get a mask that joins mouth to the rest. And it’s always awful to have your nose completely covered for hours, but a lot of overseas orcs seem to do it anyway.
As weird as this sounds, I loved watching you try and eat. It added to your alien-ness. It looked like you’d be comfortable chewing off the neck of some beast, but eating with a fork was utterly impossible.
I didn’t have a problem with breathing, even through the nose… But the large bottom lip was a problem as I couldn’t actually feel it, so couldn’t control it.
I didn’t see the link before, that looks quite good. Agree with Kara, forehead to top lip wouldn’t be too bad. Getting the thing off isn’t too bad if you have patience, or a high pain tolerance. (later for me) but clean it of the spirit gum and store it in an air tight container (zip lock bag) and it should last.
nose prosthetics are horrible! If you have even the slightest bit of a clod then they are pure torture…
If you were using it for a weekend LARP would you remove the whole mask and put it back on each day? Or would you risk sleeping with the majority of it on?
When I first read this I assumed that “clod” must be a funny word for a nose.
But on re-reading I suspect you meant “cold”. That would be horrible, having a runny nose under a latex mask.

Had this exact same thought process
I probably spent a couple of hundred of hours in my le Stirge mask and I wouldn’t rush back into doing that again.
If it covered the majority of the face (as le Stirges mask did) I would take it off and have a shower each evening. You’ll spend 5 minutes just scratching and moaning in pleasure at being out of the disgusting, sweaty mask
It also gives you a chance to wash the sweat and grime from the mask.
The worst thing really about wearing them (the latex skin kind as opposed to the latex foam appliances) it the condensation on the inside from your breathing that splashes into your face when you look up. It’s pretty nasty stuff

Most of these are 3/4 masks - as Kara described, comes down to the top lip, and more/less expertly applied depending on the person. The hair is quite often a part of the mask as well.
As to durability, it depends what it’s made from and what you use to stick it to yourself, but typically they’re made to stand up to at least a few events. I’d suggest talking to Norm if you get the chance, as he has a lot of experience with prosthetics and the application thereof.

Id suggest looking at these regardless of whether it is for mask or not… they’re amazing!
I keep saying it, but I love those Orcs. If I go to these games I’m going to be an Orc groupie, I swear. That armour. Those costumes. I’d love to have kit that detailed.
I also love this picture so much!! Reminds me a little of the picture of Derek fighting a child (Josie?):
Those photos… wow! Though I see a fair bit of Warhammer 40K (and online game) influence, any mention of that that I failed to spot?
I haven’t got any foam latex pieces but I have a monster set of Montral and Lekku (Shaak TI) and a small set of tentacles (Asari) slip cast and they are lasting really nicely. I use a fair amount of PA to hold pieces in place. I also use a bald cap which I get two wear out of before they shred and almost fall apart in my hands. So they do a lot to prtect my pieces from hair oils and moisture and everything else that rises from the scalp.
You will find the edges are harder to blend as you reuse your piece. So you may want to look into where the pieces end and if you can be creative with paint and latex and cabosil to fill and blend. I now have my Asari pieces on a head as the edges just are that gone to be able to blend easily.
I am looking into some foam latex big pieces so am about to read all the manuals on how fragile and prone to seizing or collapsing it is
Wow Neimhaille - I just checked out your gallery. You do -amazing- work and you ROCK the Lea gold bikini.
