Laser printer

The committee has voted to buy a laser printer for NZLARPS, as we have considerable printing needs for Immersion and we believe that projects and affiliates will find a lot of value from having access to cheap high-quality printing. This purchase meets the society’s goal of pooling the community’s resources to provide for common needs.

The printer we have settled on is the Fuji Xerox DocuPrint C2100. This printer is quite highly speced, the type of thing you might find in a small to medium sized business. It is capable of printing in both colour and black & white, although at first we will only be buying black toner as the colour toner is a bit expensive for an initial outlay. We can buy colour for it later, and we wanted to have the option open. It can print duplex (both sides of the paper) and in A5 booklet format automatically, so will be ideal for printing both the Immersion interior and larp rulebooks in the format of the Mordavia booklets. Print resolution is up to 9600 x 600 dpi. It can print onto paper up to 216gsm thickness (the Immersion covers are 130gsm). For more detailed specs click here. The cost of printing per page is much lower than the professional printers we have been using, so the printer will make us savings in the long run.

Please let me know if you have any inside information on this printer or know of ways to get discounts on it, as we’ll be moving to buy it quickly.

We have not yet decided the details of how the printer will be made available to projects and affiliates, but it is likely that printing will be priced to pay for the toner and any paper used, and to gradually repay the cost of the printer. This will still be cheaper than professional printing.

I’m just happy that it isn’t a Brother

The higher-end Xerox printers I’ve had experience with have been really great, that’s one of the reasons I was keen for this one.

Another reason is that Xerox seem to be one of the few brands that build in booklet printing, especially in cheaper models. And I reckon booklet printing is a really key requirement for us.

We’re just lucky to be looking at this in a time when high-end colour laser printing has suddenly become affordable. A few years ago we would have been forking out several grand for the same functionality.

The colour laser printer has been purchased and installed at a secret location.

Please contact Anna if you are a project or associate of NZLARPS and want to print larp-related things such as rulebooks or advertising material.

We are still working out what the cost per page will be, but we are more than happy to print for you. That’s what it’s for, to make printing cheap and accessable to you. A rough estimate for black & white printing is 15c per page, or 17c for double-sided printing. Most of the cost is the paper. But that’s not final, we need to firm it up.

We actually have colour printing capability immediately, as the toner comes half-full. However, we’ll be keeping an eye on the levels because when they run out the printer won’t even print plain black anymore, and colour toner is a bit pricey to replace. So if you have printing with small amounts of colour in it we can probably handle it, bit it will cost a bit more.

Can anyone recommend a place to buy cheap decent-quailty 80gsm A4 paper suitable for laser printers? I’m seeing a very wide variety in the prices out there.

Hmm, unfortunatly pricespy doesn’t have a paper section.
I would reccomend going to an office supplies place like, dam, can’t remember the names of them. Basically the more bulk you buy in the much cheaper it gets.

I can see 500 page reams from Warehouse Stationary for around $6, but dunno if the print quailty would be too poor.
