LARPing as a form of Educational Theatre

Is it possible there could be an entirely unrealised aspect to LARP’s that I’ve presented here…?

Comments anyone?

Live Action Role Playing.

If you ever did improv at school and were given a character outline first then you have taken part in Live Role Playing.

If however you did the above and a fight broke out with prop weapons then you have taken part in Live Action Role Playing.

Unfortunatly what with the weapon side of things it is unlikly to go down well in state schools however a good public school will probably take it up as an evening activity if we offer the right support for it.

Joel - there’s a high school in Debmark that teaches entirely with roleplay. EDIT: it’s called Østerskov Efterskole. That’s the most extreme example of larp pedagogy I know of, but there are others. Info on the school here: osterskov.dk/index.php?optio … &Itemid=40

Adam - attempts to distinguish “LRP” and “LARP” are pointless and surely a subject for another thread.

weapons don’t constitute action. action does.

…unless you’re playing undead, in which case it’s just ARP (Action Role Playing).

Are you saying Improv didn’t have action in it? I still have a knee injury from my theatresports days. I was thrown across the stage, leapt on top of people, leapt on top of BY people, was carried like a rifle, carried a guy about you size (not very far) and spent time underwater… I think action wise there was more action density in a theatre sports compition than in alot of LARPs I’ve been in.

And if we realy want to get into getting pedantic and denifing stuff…table top is LRP too…its live and not pre-recorded and its roleplaying…

By LRP or LARP, we mean roleplaying that involves some aspect of physical aspect in the telling of the story. We’ve had discussions before about trying to subdefine things lime MET as not realy being LARP as you dont use boffer weapons…its all pointless the hobby isn’t big enough to try to subdefine things and put up self created differences between playing groups.

If it doesn’t have action doesn’t mean its not a LARP, You could have weapons and not use them. It can have action and not have weapons, It can still be a LARP. If your up and walking around, Interacting, No combat, No Weapons, All polite and dignified subdued plesentries, It’s still a LARP. Its not realy the LA (or L) bit thats important its the RP…

To me its all about the roleplaying. I mean if we realy want a clear definition we should go with SDRP (sit down role play) and MARP (move around role play). Or we can just play.

Lol, Sidurping and Marping don’t have the same rings to them…

I know I did it today with my year 9’s. They had to agree on a compromise with the Plebeians while stabbing each other in the back and advancing their own interests.

The kids can really get into it and it can be exceptionally useful  I loved it but then I am that way inclined. There are definitely some things I would tweak doing it again though
