Larp-grade first aid

Hi all,

Just asking to see what the level of interest would be for a first aid lesson designed for events like Teonn and other activities that involve running around in the wilderness. I know Vanya is interested in such a thing but if anyone else from Auckland would like to join in you’re more than welcome.

It would be an informal afternoon lesson covering basic wound care and injury management in an outdoors setting- a.k.a what you can do with what you’re wearing and have lying around, CPR, what to do to keep them alive until the medic gets there and general guidelines of when it’s a good idea to grab a medic for both larp and real life situations.

I would go. Sounds very valuable!

That’d be great!

I’d also be keen on getting actual First Aid certification if that’s possible. I know that’d be a longer time commitment, but I guess I’d rather go whole-hog an do it properly.

I can’t certify you sorry, St John would get very cranky if I started handing out bits of paper, but they have plenty of weekend-long first aid courses that you can go on. I’m not sure of cost though but most of the time if you ask your boss nicely they’ll pay for you to attend to meet OSH regulations.

Part of the advantage of what I’m doing is teaching bits they don’t cover in a workplace first aid course and blending in a bit of outdoors first aid. Sorta the extra add-ons.

Having done the full outdoor first aid courses, I have to say they are very useful for events like this where you wont have everything easily accessible and ambulances will take a while to get there.

Good work Linda

I’m going on one of the short course st john does on the 7th through the Uni for my course. So we should have another basic first aider in the group soon.

This sounds like a great idea. On a related note, and please forgive me if this is a silly question, but is there a list of LARPers who are first aid certified?

The answer seems to be “lots”. We all put our hands up at Chimera and it was a silly proportion, seemed like it was in the region of 20% of people maybe?

It might be worth putting together a list for organisers so they have names of people and their skill level they can call on at big events like Chimera and Teonn.

Looks like there’s enough interest for a class.

I’ll be covering CPR, basic broken bone and sprain care, basic tissue damage care, altered level of consciousness, a bit of hypo/hyperthermia, hypoglycemia, allergic reactions, burns, moving patients, jury-rigged care and finishing up with a small scenario where we can put these skills into practice- Larper Fred who’s fallen down a bank in the bush, broken a couple of things on the way down and needs to be moved to safety.

Tentatively looking at 2:30pm Sunday 11th for holding the class.

Is there anything that people would like to have covered in particular or another date that would be better?

I won’t be able to make it unfortunately, but it sounds like a great idea!
One suggestion of things to include would be how to do a good handover to the paramedics when they arrive. This wasn’t really covered in the First Aid course I did, but it’s an invaluable skill when caring for anyone in an emergency situation.
Something along the lines of what information is important to convey, and how to do that in a clear and concise way (no need to get into medical jargon, just the basics - who you are, what the situation is at the moment, what happened and what you have done). Sometimes it helps in a stressful situation to have a pre-practiced model to follow.

That is a great suggestion, I’ll put that one in. Thanks!

Looks like it’s a go-ahead for the 11th, 2:30pm. It’ll be at my place, please let me know you’re coming via PM (so I know how much to get in terms of supplies) and I’ll send you the address.

please let me know how it goes, idd love to get my st john mates insight and make a cirriculum/teach pack thingy for another time with you if you like. might eve get donations (nzno and st johns have donated to me before)

Hi guys,

If you’re planning on coming please let me know by Wednesday so I can get the supplies together.

Thanks!

Hi guys, just a reminder about the training on Sunday, there’s still plenty of space if anyone would like to come
