Larp costumes mostly suck, let’s make them better

Jared has a piece on larping.org:

larping.org/larp-costumes-su … em-better/

Nice.

Some St Wolfgang’s photos credited to me that I didn’t take. There’s only one that might be mine, of Carl at Mordavia, but not even sure about that.

It was a bit disconcerting seeing this topic appearing hard on the heels of Chimera, when generally the costuming levels were good. Bit having read it, the article is more about "Larp costumes WERE bad, but they are now much better, and this is how we did it."
The another correction I saw, was that the matching crew chainmail used on Teonn is owned by Matt, and not owned by NZlarps AFAIK.
But nicely written overall, am surprised Jared had the energy to write/post it last night - I crawled into bed at 8pm.

Yes. It seems to have grown out of a conversation on Twitter, on why some US larps accepted such low costume standards.
The another correction I saw, was that the matching crew chainmail used on Teonn is owned by Matt
Matt does indeed have some matching sets of chainmail and other items that he has been lending out at Teonn (which really are very nice - they’re ex Legend of the Seeker). To the best of my knowlege, NZLARPS does not currently own any chainmail.

Yeah this was my bad. I thought we had some in the gear pool. I found myself corrected this weekend. I wrote this article about 3 weeks ago however submitted it only late last week.

As stated this article is intended for the US. Whose costumes standards vary considerably but many are very low. This was a how to do better article, I am slightly annoyed at the title, it wasn’t mine. I have retweeted a more positive title and I will see if I can get it changed but once you read the article you will realise it is all about how to do better.

Congratulations on getting published

They have changed the article title. Much better now.

aaaaaaaand now the url wont work =(

There you go!

larping.org/larp-costumes-make-them-better/

way better name, less attention grabbing, but also less defence provoking. =p

Not to be picky, but those photos of SWVH were taken by Judit Klein and Ryan Smale.

Would you guys be interested in a “BUY SELL SWAP TRADE DISCUSS Larp costume and armor” dedicated facebook page if one was set up?

the cross over of diatribe costume requests and chimera facebook page costume requests was annoying. be nice to have just one. and i think almost everyone with a diatribe has a FB? no? n00bs often have a FB but not a diatribe.

Hmm I took the credits for the photos from the Wolfgangs webpage… my bad I guess.

Also I must mention that Muppet also contributed to the article! Sorry Muppet, you should have been mentioned in the article as a co-author!

Quite apart from my hatred of FaceSpy, this just seems redundant. For buying and selling, there’s TradeMe and/or PaddyWhack (and numerous other international retailers). For swaps, there’s here. For discussion and DIY, there’s here or Amphigori’s planned kit guide site.

And that’s four different places - which is exactly Yahn’s point

Well, its four different functions, and FaceSpy’s functionality isn’t a good match for any of them. It has no ecommerce functionality, so you can’t buy or sell, and its discussion capabilities are limited, so its not so good for that end of things either. Plus, its in its own little walled garden, sealed off from the (almost) all-seeing-eye-of-Google, so people who don’t know about it won’t be able to stumble upon it. Which is not a Good Thing if you are trying to build a community.

It’s Facebook. And by now its privacy practices are well known and wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone with an inkling of internet savvy. I’m failing to see how Facebook’s lack of privacy (and your hatred of it) are bad while the ‘(almost) all-seeing eye of Google’ is an acceptable subsititute.

Back on topic: Jackie is considering making the site more than simply a knowledge dump; it’s possible there could be an area on that site specifically designed as a “global/national gear pool” - Yahn it may be worth getting in touch with Jackie and discussing it, if you have a potential solution in mind.
