Larp Census 2014

If you’ve ever larped or considered larping, it would be great if you can fill out the Larp Census so we know how many larpers there are in NZ:

larpcensus.org

The site has gone viral internationally, so it looks like we will get a pretty good idea of the scale of larp around the world.

Cool, thanks Ryan. The results will definitely be interesting. When is it complete? So far 105 kiwi’s have done it. A staggering percentage of the Danish population have completed it. And a higher percentage of kiwis have than aussies.

At 126 kiwis so far, we’re still at less than 20% of the number of people following the NZLARPS FaceSuck group.

We’re looking at going 3 months until the end of the year, but if results are still pouring in we may have to extend.

This is a really cool initiative, well done guys!

I think we may reach 1% of the Danish population eventually.

Previous Danish government research estimated that over 10% of their youth had larped.

Boggle. I’ll be interested in seeing what the results are like.

There’s a fascinating variety of countries - Vatican City!

Wow, Vatican City at 0.12% of their population!

Only 842 people live there.

And its completely normalised. If you’ve watched Forbrydelsen or Borgen, both have larping kids in them.

Yeah, its kinda cheating the stats - 0.12% is just one person.

Reminder: the larp census closes on January 10. Fill it out while you still can.

Awesome, thanks!

Preamble finishes almost on the dot of 6 minutes in if you want to skip straight to the slides.

I’m really looking forward to the full data release; lots of potential to correlate different responses and look for differences between countries.

Though I’m also expecting that Ryan will analyse NZ with his Copious Free Time

It’s amazing what you can get done in the middle of the night with a baby sleeping on you.

I gotta say I’m most excited about doing a factor analysis on the motivation questions. I majored in psych and that attitude survey stuff still really interests me, but also it’s like “oh you have a theory about the different reasons people larp? A version of GNS that you’ve thought very carefully about you say? Well, here are our conclusions based on responses from 20,000 larpers.”

Empirical evidence for the win.

I’m learning network analysis for my dissertation so I might grab a copy of the census data to experiment with.

Is that code for you have a baby now? If yes, congratulations!

(For the first 6 weeks with my daughter, I had these most amazing nights of sitting up with her with lots of time to think, but no hands to type. So frustrating!)

Yes! I forget that news on Facebook doesn’t reach everyone. We have little boy called William, 11 weeks now and lying on me as I type this as he’s not great at settling in his cot until later at night. So cute.

What’s the politist way of saying this? FB has become a ubiquitous communication tool. Not having it these days means you miss a lot. The larp groups alone are awesome, I belong to so many now and they seem to have replaced web forums for most things. But the whole platform is just so rich within information. It’s worth reconsidering the balance of pros and cons.
