Kick Ass larp system

I was thinking that it might be nice to have the system used for Flight of the Hindenburg and Great Exhibition written up in a generic form, in a nicely formatted PDF. It’s about the simplest abstract system I’ve ever heard of, and if it was well presented then it could perhaps become widely influential outside NZ.

Perhaps it could be called something like “The Kick Ass larp system”, or Kick Ass for short?

We could all write the text together either here on the forum, or on a wiki, and then make the PDF freely available (with all the appropriate credits of course). It could be presented in such a way that GMs could write games using it, and players could read it before playing a game that uses it.

I’m very traditional when it comes to this type of thing and I personally prefer “Kick arse”. “Kick ass” is too American for my taste. I think a British spelling adds a certain extra amount of style and good taste to the whole thing.

I will assume you’re joking, even though I know you’re not.

What’s there to joke about ? Don’t let the 'Mericans colonise you in the head ! It’s arse, I say ! An ass is a hybrid donkey, and that’s the end of it. If we don’t stop this madness now, everyone will run around saying “Aloominum”, and where would we be then ?

I would call it Kick Ass out of respect for the Wellingtonians who came up with it, because that’s the name and spelling they used for its most prominent feature. I don’t care why they called it that, and I don’t bother pretending that I haven’t already been colonised in the head by the mighty US of A. The term “kick ass” has already colonised my head, and yours whether you like it or not, and regardless of spelling the term is an Americanism.

Why are we discussing the name first?

[shrug] I always pronounce it ‘arse’ no matter how it’s spelt.

I’m an arse man too.

“Come Try the new Kick Donkey Larping System!”

oh my god, poor Ryan.

Isn’t kicking an ass a type of animal abuse?

Scotty wins the funniest arse joke award.

When I hit trouble with regional spelling on Wikipedia, I switch it up and just use a word that’s spelled the same everywhere. Like using “arrange” instead of "organise/organize’.

So, seeing we’re starting with the name, any ideas for a better name for the system that doesn’t involve words with regional spelling variations?

I think most of us are just taking the piss lol. I personally think the kick-ass System sounds fine to me
I think most of us are just taking the piss lol. I personally think the kick-ass System sounds fine to me
I’ve never entirely liked the name (the system seems to work well though). It just sounds a bit too, um, crude?

But as Ryan said, it’s a good homage to the original writers and a key distinction of the system itself.

I was hoping someone would pick this up, Hindenberg was so much fun and a universal system for huge social games would be quite awesome.

But who are the original writers, anyway? It was like that at Hindenberg, and the Britannia game before that at Kapcon, but I don’t know who originally came up with the idea, or if it was borrowed from someone else’s game or what.

I’ll ask around. I missed 10-4, and I wasn’t terribly involved in “I know what you roleplayed last summer”, so I don’t know if it was in either of those or not.
