I want to go to chimera this year but I dont know what it is. This makes me feel like a massive noob.
I don’t like being a noob. Help please!
Hey Lochie,
We can fix that. I’m Anna, and I run Chimera. Chimera is a weekend-long convention with six rounds of larps. You play one larp Friday night, one larp Saturday morning, one larp Saturday afternoon, one larp on Saturday night, one larp Sunday morning and one larp Sunday afternoon. There’s several different options in each round, so heaps and heaps of different games on. It’s up in Auckland, but there is accommodation on site, and you can also pay for your food in advance (about $30 for a weekend’s worth of meals) Plus there’s candy and soft drink.
Your age is a bit of a concern (you seem younger than 16), but if you’re really keen to come, we might be able to arrange something, since it sounds like you really need a larping fix!
Here is our website from last year: chimera.nzlarps.org
I’m happy to answer any other questions you have
Chimera is a convention based totally around Larps. There will be a mixture of pretty much any type of Larp you can want. There are 6 sessions.
Friday night
2 smaller sessions Saturday
Main Larp Saturday night
And then 2 more sessions Sunday.
All sessions are 3 hours and multiple games are running. You choose what appeals to you.
People are very friendly and welcoming. There is accomodation there on site, so not far to go to get changed or sleep. And you can pay a set price and get hot, good food during the breaks
You are in Hamilton so not far to go, and I would really recommend you go check it out
Yay! I’ll be 16 by the time chimera is on so I’m supra keen! Thanks for the info!!!
Now… What to wear? What’s the kind of theme type games in chimera? I’m going for every game!!!

All different kinds of games have run at Chimera in the last three years. Fantasy, science fiction, western, political, modern military, horror, gangsters, superheroes, Victorian, Shakespearean, pirates, soap opera, and so on.
There will probably be about 5 game options in each timeslot, so you can play every timeslot but you can’t play every game. Have a look at last year’s timetable to see what I mean ( nzlarps.org/chimera/timetable.html ). You’re bound to be able to play a fantasy game in one of the timeslots, so if that’s your thing then you could start putting together a medieval fantasy costume.
Everyone plays together in the big Saturday night larp. This year the theme is space opera, so if start gathering some sort of science fiction costume you’ll probably be able to wear it on Saturday night.
In most Chimera larps you’ll be assigned a character. So it’s best to see what your character is before totally finishing your costume. This doesn’t happen until a month or two before Chimera happens though, so getting prepared can help.
