Historically Authentic Cloaks

I’m going to the medieval festival down in Taupo and this time, I’d like to learn from the mistake of previous years and make some warm garb for the chilly nights. I’ve got a few cloak patterns but they’re all kind of fantasy looking, as well as requiring a megaton of fabric.

Can anyone recommend a cloak making method/pattern that is economical with fabric (wool is expensive) and also suitable for a re-enactment event?

It depends on what period you’re doing. But, I recommend an early period rectangular cloak. That’s what I wore at St Wolfgang’s

I get a heavy woolen blanket from Kiwi Disposals on K Rd. They cost about $30 and are heavy wool.

Cut off a 2" strip all around the outside. I normally don’t do anything to the edges because the wool is fulled (felted) enough that it doesn’t fray.

Fold over the top foot and close with a penannular broach. Warreen Green makes nice broaches for about $30 if you want to get one.

The good thing about these cloaks is you end up with a double layer of wool over your shoulders and much less wool hanging around your feet to get wet.

You can also flip the folded over piece as a hood if you wish.

Here is how to make a viking broach - I do it without heat and it works fine.
