hmm, well I had a gradient effect rather than just a solid colour, so maybe it was the stuff Nadine diluted the ink with that stung (although I thought it was just water).
The dark areas on my pasifika tat were just done with the line needle, and did not sting like dragon - I seem to remember that Nadine said it was a multi-point needle, but that was <6years ago, so I don’t really remember…

Are you sure thats a tat and not a face paint/make-up job? There are what look to be paint swirls on the nose and in the cheek hollows. The sort you get when the paint starts to come back off the surface - e.g. if you apply a 2nd coat before the first is really dry.
As a make-up effect it is pretty nifty - wish I had time to do that to our monsters before each game!
