Good Larp Locations

So anyway, today we had a family trip out to visit Matiu-Some’s Island, and in amongst the wandering around enjoying it, I couldn’t help thinking that it would make a great location for an adventure-style larp - forested tracks, a beach, gun emplacements, a really big empty building with weird machines, that kind of thing. Obviously you’d have to get on side with DOC and be careful about the wildlife and other visitors, but it has a heck of a lot of potential.

(And I thought it would be useful to share notes on good local spots.)

Funny you mention it. I’d said the same thing to Bryn and he and I were tipped to head out there at some point.

You can also rent accommodation on the island. I reckon it’d be a neat location for an overnight larp. Could even be fun to take advantage of the setting:

While on a late-night joyride in your friend’s dad’s speedboat you crash into the rocks of an island you steered too close to and have have to make a desperate swim to shore. You’re now stranded on an island within sight of the mainland. One of your party has suffered significant injuries and needs medical care urgently. It should be easy to call for help but your cell phones are ruined and the radio’s gone down with the boat. You remember that rangers live on the island - maybe they have a phone you can use! A few of your party go to get help … and never return. Was that a scream you just heard …? And aren’t there rumours that this island is haunted?

Dum dum dummmmmm.

I looked online about Soames island and it didn’t seem to have many facilities at all.

I think it would only work for a day game since the facilities don’t seem extensive enough for an over nighter…

But I also thought it could be a really atmospheric location.

Today I went to the end of a mine shaft on Tinakori Hill. Really cool spot, but a long walk from any other sites of interest.

It does. 3 different buildings you can hire overnight. I have the quotes (and have already sent them to Bryn). Very affordable - and each have cooking facilities, bunks, showers, etc…

The only catch is the last ferry to the island on a Friday leaves at 2pm, so at best you could have only a Saturday night game. And during the daytime the place is buzzing with tourists.

Interesting. The DOC website must be rather out of date.

Or maybe I was thinking in terms of large games…

The only reason I found out about accommodation on the island was from a very friendly guide who befriended Luke and I last time we were there. He slipped me an email address and I’ve written to them as recently as October 09 to reconfirm pricing (Luke and I keep meaning to stay there for a weekend) and it’s still all good.

So, yes, probably woefully out of date.
