Games for Chimera 2011

Yup, that was the thinking …

Some random Joe/Janice Bloggs invites 20 friends over for their 15th birthday … someone finds their old toy box from Joe/Janice’s childhood … mess around with their old toys for a while, find a battered board game labelled “Zathura” …

The fact that whatever you roll on the board is what suddenly happens is also an interesting twist. The crew would have to be ready to roll out almost any encounter and changes of set dressing at a moment’s notice.

In some larps there is a strategic component like directing “real” armies that are abstracted onto a map or something. This is kind of the opposite - the abstract strategy of the game becomes the reality of the larp. Lots of opportunity for physical and mental challenges.

Oh good, my costume budget might survive all the victoriana steampunky spacefaring stuff people are talking about after all!

Either Zathura/Jumanji or otherwise, it could be fun to have the But Nobody Loses An Eye! -type crowd like five or ten years later.

I am also very keen for this sleepover game idea. Ah that wonderful Nightmare Circle game a few years back with the sleepover…

Had an idea and a few mechanical ideas for a game tonight… something set in the control room of the Large Hadron Collider.

Am thinking of doing something similar Super Sparkle Action Princess GX, except with the cast and crew of an old time pulp detective show. Am just wondering if it’s advisable or whatever, and if so are there any hints or suggestions I could get in writing it?

Hints and stuff based on how our one went? The need to film a complete episode with a live camera gave a lot of structure to the game - people were very busy doing the filming stuff and the interpersonal relationships happened in the spaces inbetween (but in a cool way), so I think you wouldn’t need to focus so much on ‘what are people going to do’ type plots (secrets, politics, puzzles etc) and give writing attention to how people feel and relate to each other and what their emotional issues are. And maybe make the camera operator an official NPC, because they’re so tied up with the filming. We put a lot of effort into getting people into a shared fictive space about the show. They were already pretty genre-savvy, but we also gave them background material about the story so far, and what the audience thought of it, and a sample incomplete script (which they promptly threw away). By the end of the game, they were making remarks to each other about “the wand from that Evil Exploding Fish episode from last season” and my heart leapt with joy.

Comments from people who played in it? I’ll probably rerun it sometime, so I’m interested for me as well.
(Video clip update - made contact with The Guy With The Editing Software, probably won’t get access until the weekend after this one because of various busy-nesses.)

Hokay - definitely writing a Steampunk style game. Still trying to work out how best to get the steampunking itself worked in and the level of complexity will depend on the players/characters. I have a few ideas and there will be a simple questionnaire as to how complex a player wants to get.

But it will be the year 1889 and very much not on Earth.

As simple as possible.

That’s the opinion of my beloved partner in crime. The steam punk aspect will most likely be 99% purely cosmetalic.

Are you going to have a Seedy Opium Den?

And if so, can I clean it up with my new shoulder-mounted, horizontally-opposed, peltier-enhanced, electoplasma-globule-launching Zap cannon? I promise it won’t explode, or release a horde of killer owls, or eat anybody’s brain, or anything like that. Just good clean fun for every sheriff in the city!

Tempting, but not on this flight.

If that one was for me, that’s a dangerous question to ask. I have far too much fun making those sorts of things misbehave to the … creative … appreciations… of the players. Non-Chimera Campaign, perhaps. Chimera game…

No.

Awwww…

Heh … sounds like good times.

In seriousness though … muchly looking forward to it.

Would anyone be interested in running a Houses of the Blooded larp at Chimera next year?

I’ve been having this interesting discussion about it on RPG.net, and now I’m curious to play.

Looks interesting enough. What’s the genre and whatnot?

Beats me.

What if they find an old battered board game called “Testify!”, which looks like an evangelical attempt to show kids how cool the Bible can be. Looking at the board, it seems you start out in the Garden of Eden, then lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, etc… and you can probably guess the ending.

Irreverent fun.

Teenagers who find a boardgame, start playing and crazy stuff happens? Sounds like The Forbidden Game trilogy, by LJ Smith, one of my favourite teen-pulp series ever. Ah, Julian
