Favorite/funniest moments for Chimera 2011?

One Night in Heaven: Beating back every competitor and winning all fights bought against me (as Thor) when others were attempting to get hold of the horn that would destroy the world, or was it destroy the leader of their pantheon, or was it something else? The rumours flew everywhere, and despite the confusion as to what it did, I was glad to be in possession of it! Other great moments included slugging Zues in the face, taking the apples of eternal youth back from the traitorous Idunn, threatening Loki and having him come through on his promise.

Colonel Rawhide’s Circus of the Spectacular: Tricking everyone that I was on their side, taking the Grimoire, stealing the ‘prince’, and other general deception and nastiness as one of the worst villains on the scene.

OOC: Catching up with a bunch of awesome Auckland larpers who I haven’t seen since last Chimera, as well as meeting some awesome new people. Thanks to everyone who make the weekend so awesome!

Traitorous? She just knew a good thing when she saw it. :smiling_imp:

So we murdered her for nothing?
Yup! After the larp i spoke to Anna, who confirmed that Earth was WAAAAAYYYYYY to far away to actually pilage. So she wasn’t going to bother.
Of course, shadowing Anna for 5 minutes waiting for the blue haired smiley girl to initiate the “distraction” so I could put 6 shots into her back was quite a heart pumping! Then we couldn’t find the metal, but we did find a deadman switch… THAT Made us run away. Lucky they both had to die and I wasn’t taking a chance at the armoured dude!! .

I liked teaching Mani the robot dance after getting the mother of my child to give her an upper, although I still think the best line I came up with was when I was asked what colour the baby would be (human & blue alien) - I replied with “Baby Blue”… Yup. CORNEY!

^^^^ enjoyed learning it

So we murdered her for nothing?
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer lady.

Also I had to actually deliberately let it go off. I wish you had killed him as well; their ghosts would’ve been shocked to see the resounding lack of explosion…

I’m not denying that, but she did up and leave us with those very important apples that we needed to stay young.

I did feel unaccustomedly sorry for the poor little crying girl. My favourite bit was giving her a forgetter instead of an upper. Because remembering her parents were dead completely killed my buzz.

Baby blue sort of made me crack up too. :smiling_imp:

Firstly, the sheer emotional buzz when I pulled in to Motu Moana, and hopped out of the car, was fantastic. Haven’t felt that good in some time, and if you’re a friend or person I talked to this weekend, it’s because of you. Now, onto the character moments.

The Bell
I think the best moment for me was at the beginning of Interlude 3, where Prema and I wake up, and we are both looking directly at each other. That look in her eyes of intense hate, oh, it was chilling. Fantastic work by Prema, because that set the tone for the remainder of that game. I can only hope I was as good an antagonist as her expression suggested.

Asterix and the Council of Carnutes
My favourite game, albiet by a slight margin. Everything in the game was just so Asterix it was magnificent. The costumes, roleplaying by everyone involved, it was like being part of the world. For me, as Bombastix, a non regular cast member, it was very easy to get into the world, and I loved every minute.
The back and forth I had with Gaffy as Vitalstatistix was great fun, old friends teasing each other, giving each other no end of grief, but when it came to battle, having each others’ backs.
Mid-council, standing up and finally accusing Dianetix (TK) of murdering our old friend and chief, and rallying all but one of the gauls into an anti roman frenzy, was fantastic. Did not plan to call Dianetix out like that, it just happened, but TK took it in stride and the roleplay was great! Soon Gaul will be free from Roman Rule!
Finally, though I guarantee I did not do nearly as much scheming as Impedimenta (Prema), I really enjoyed try to marry off my two (three) daughters, and the ending of getting Asterix and Obelix as sons in law was quite satisfying. High Five for Impedimenta!
I could go on, but huge thanks to everyone in this game, I had a blast!

Stop That It’s Silly
Ran this game with the aim of it being stupidly silly and fun. Success by players’ accounts, phew. Best moment: end of game, singing “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”, arm in arm with the entire game, kicking in time to the music. Can’t wait for the photos of that. Thanks again for playing!

Colonel Sebastian T Rawhide’s Circus of the Spectacular
Being the villain is fun, as was last year’s Chimera theme for me! Of course, playing the villain who actually gets his comeuppance, that’s always fun to play, especially as it adds to the game. Loved my foils, Tetrajak as the secret evil, and Dave Agnew as the rival circus owner.
Great roleplay with Dave, we improvised so many insults it was fantastic. “Sergeant Rawhide!” “That’s Colonel, Mister Bungling.” “Old Seb” “Jackie Boy” etc. You are quite the man Mr Agnew.
Making Ellen (as the lovely Daisy Belle) lose her character with the eyebrow waggle, hilarious and unintentional, but fun.

Jade Empire: Makato Fort
Second favourite game. Died Twice, but still feel like I won.
Dueling Jackie, both with bokken and words, was super fun. Being an evil blacklander spirit possessing people, fantastic. Discovering Hamish, lord of the fort, was really the other blacklander possessor, exciting, and it led to an epic duel between Fraser and I, in which the spirit passed into him.
Playing a person in a coma, and then playing a corpse, it was actually quite enjoyable, especially with Jackie’s character’s sorrow at my loss.
Good work by all, and yes, though I was on his side for half the game, Hamish still got to do the traditional stabbing me in the back. Always a pleasure Mr Meads.

TLDR indeed. Chimera was awesome, even more so than last year. Here’s to everyone making it a good year next time!

Can you belive that damned rabbit still tried to gnaw my neck during the show-stopping finale? That, and Gaffy conveniently droped the Holy Hand Grenade down my hood, blowing me up just as the song finished. Bloody army lot…

I’m finding it hard to pin down a favourite moment for Chimera 2011. There was, to be quite honest, a whole bunch of fun to be had. I had a bunch of challenging roles (for me) and of all the Chimera’s, I feel like I learned the most from this one.
For someone of 12 years LARPing experience but very limited “social” larping experience (but admission I am a live combat junkie), I felt this one was definitely the best for me.

Of course, Asterix was awesome to see come to fruition, I was very nervous about running a hybrid of live combat and “social” larp, something I had never really done before. And I’ll be damned it freaking worked.

So from this year, I doubt I will ever approach LARP writing the same again.

A little on the inspiring larps I played-
The Doll Makers Wife - A brief brief. Minimal background. And and F-ton of player buy in. Just shows what can be done with so little. And run by a sometimes giggling young girl.
Asterix - durr, what I said before.
Chakta Peace Accord - Achilles Tor was a dick. I was doing ok with objectives but in the end I let go of the character sheet and went with it.
Gordian Knot - Cash - also a dirty a-hole of a character. But the game ran like it was like my own little murder mystery. Challenging and rewarding, it wasn’t until I reflected on just how well I ended up doing… just a pity Matrix Throne got away!
Pestilence and Petrie Dishes - Chicken Pox - What a nice guy. You bunch of child killing dicks for the most part. Funny that the STI’s (even though Syphillis jilted me) and the Common Cold were the only ones with any common decency.
Forgotten Gods - pretty much reminded me of the fun but also flaws of fantasy games. Got to be on time and organised. And then you can go a cavorting through the woods hooting like an idiot apeman.

SO see you all next year!

Heck yeah!

The Bell: New course - we’re going to the Horsehead Nebula! Yayy!

Also, there was this bit when the Revenants sitting around started up with a chained “Welcome to The Soul. Welcome to The Soul. Welcome to The Soul…” Goosebumps running up and down my spine.

I had a great time this year at Chimera (I tend to every year). Chimera is another opportunity for me to see all my Auckland friends which I enjoy as well. Breaking it down by round:

Round 1: Bad Dreams. I got to play a fun character who by all appearances looked nasty, who wasn’t quite there and sane, but was probably was one of the nicer people there. After finding the bodies I had a moment where I grabbed Ants and threw him against a wall, knowing Ants well, I knew I could get away with this. It added to the tension and really played into something Ants had been doing in character so helped him as well. Having searched the bodies and found Ben’s character’s CSI crime kit, seriously this guy had a hat made, an ID badge, syringes, camera, gloves, all sorts, I love seeing props and details like this. The scene in the kitchen where Norman and Kara kept pounding me into the ground with one cunning trick after another, and me not being able to get the upper hand. And then being turned into a zombie and stumbling around, especially when the women realised how protective Lars was of them, and started to cunningly turn situations against the men.

Round 2: Snow White. My second attempt at running 2 games at once. Once we got the rooms tidied, characters handed out and groups split, we got started. And then the mayhem began, every game I have run of this has gone differently, and it’s nice to see different characters get the result they wanted. I had a fantastic bunch of players though, and I’m just glad I wasn’t living in those kingdoms. The players seemed to have fun as well and that is the important thing for me.

Round 3: Free Round. I took this round off to help out around the camp, unwind, and get ready for the Gordian Knot, cause yes, it really does take that long. Thanks to the people who gave advice on the costume and make up btw, the little tricks here and there really help.

Round 4: Gordian Knot. Being part of such a fantastic group who had all made such an effort with the costumes. One of the funnier moments, was a conversation with Lucy’s character where I finally confessed my deep dark secrets (that I had killed someone – SO bad amongst the trees, and being forced by the government to sell our secrets), when she told me she had a secret as well, and blatantly asking me for a treesome with Walter’s character, I pretty much cracked up laughing.

Round 5: Knightshade. I admit, this was stressful for me, running someone else’s game, when it’s a big combat game. But I had some fantastic people helping me out and I think we pulled it off with people having fun. There was a bit at the end where most of the players decide to take on neither of the “bad” guys and walk away and abandon the village. Russell and I looked at each other and then shrugged and said well the whole point was what choice the characters made, so let them wander off.

Round 6: The Scummit. I was shattered before we started this game, asleep on my feet. But I had a great game, lots of subtle roleplaying opportunities. Andrew was great as the Rabbi, and the scene near the end where I was saying prayers over your body, and others were cursing you and flicking ashes on you was…interesting. Ellen was great as Eli’s wife as well, dodging around certain things, and really using emotions to pull him back from the brink. Much more craziness than I was expecting.

Some highlights:

The Bell

Had good fun persuading the mad girl to drop us nice people off at our destination before going off exploring space (see, it pays to be nice to crazy people before they gain control of everything). In truth I loved the whole game - brilliant structure and writing, great RP moments, and fantastic metaphysic!

Astrix

So much fun! I wrote 3 songs and improvised a bunch more. Loved being tortured by the Romans. When the feather failed, they found my greatest weakness - threatening to rip up my compositions. Another great moment was persuading Vitalstatistix that he should send the Gauls out to get my music back, else I’d just have to improvise. Also, Cacofonix wasn’t gay! Loved having fans, too - you know, people roleplaying that they enjoy hearing me screech.

Stop that, it’s silly
A laugh from beginning to end. Had great fun messing with the Knights. Also, Tim the French Enchanter and Tim the Simple Enchanter are both fantastic takes on a beloved film character.

Gordian Knot
Absolutely fantastic game. Had a great time trying (unsuccessfully) to free some slaves. Helped negotiate an interesting deal with the Mort. Arranged to have sexual liaisons with 3 other trees. Brilliant costumes, and everyone seemed to be so busy!

Little Dippings
Got to wear tails  Had good fun being mad with an increasingly large number of people. Good RP moments with my tutor and my doctor (the latter got to join me in his own institute!).

Scummit
Mani, you were so much fun to wield! And Patch - you’re the only person who made me feel significantly unsafe. I got a smug sense of satisfaction towards the end of the game when I found out that Kerry had been spreading rumours about me - I knew there were plenty of reasons I had a quiet smile at your death. I actually owe thanks to Scott and Patch for giving me the idea (unbeknownst to them) of having as many Russians standing outside as I could… and ensure that the Jews and the Italians had their people running around elsewhere. Getting outside at the end and realizing that the only people who came with me were three women - Kerry’s partner and two of the three sisters. Then reflecting that I was quite pleased with that outcome. Sending in the Russians was such a relief - a final, decisive way of removing many of my problems.

Overall the quality of the games, the costuming and the roleplaying was amazing. Best Chimera yet!

Gordian Knot - Cash - also a dirty a-hole of a character. But the game ran like it was like my own little murder mystery. Challenging and rewarding, it wasn’t until I reflected on just how well I ended up doing… just a pity Matrix Throne got away!
I managed to pull off all my missions except finding out who killed your character, Jared! I admittedly enjoyed giving Cash all those dirty looks for mistreating my character as a slave. It was both confusing and hilarious to talk to other characters behind your back because basically everyone’s reaction was, “Stay away from him. He’s a bad bad man.” (But they also hadn’t a clue beyond that.) And then finally confronting you and after a long pause, you saying, “Um, can you remind me what I did again?”

I finally gave up on that mission and ended up trying to sabotage my mistress’s romantic relationship with her brother’s slave, who was also her half-brother.

Soap Opera indeed!

Diane (Catta)

I had a soap opera moment in You Are Cordially Invited to. I was playing the bad ass loner werewolf superhero who secretly was in love with the bride (Kelly) after a drunken night of passion some years ago had left me carrying a torch for her. Because I loved her, I was attending the wedding to ensure she was happy with Thunderbird. I gave her long lingering soulful sad looks at start of the night and then got her alone, sidled up and gave her a wedding gift. Told her it should have been me, but that I wanted her to be happy. She had no clue what I was talking about - had no idea our characters had ever had a night of drunken passion and basically was clueless. I must have been really getting into character because I was actually quite gutted and that’s when I started drinking heavily for the rest of the night and blaming my antisocial behaviour on alcohol. I really was quite upset - sniff.

Tanya (Fenris)

This was my first trip up to Chimera and I had a wonderful time. It was great catching up with the various people who’d made the trek down for Kapcon the last few years as well as meeting so many new people. Thank you to all of the organisers, GMs, and players for such a wonderful weekend.

Round 1: You are Cordially Invited… I had already played this game as the groom Jack Reynolds in the Wellington run. Here I was cast as the Bruce Wayne/Batman analogue Reynard Hackett/Raptor, a character I’d had absolutely nothing to do with the first time. The highlight of this game for me was when I succeed in convincing Fraser as Burt Hackett/Raven (a Dick Grayson/Robin/Nightwing analogue) to abandon the woman he loved to devote his life entirely to fighting injustice, leaving him a forlorn and broken mess.

Round 2: One Night in Heaven. A great setup for this game but things got muddled and confusing in the second half when the roleplaying got buried beneath the game elements. My favourite moment was right at the beginning of the game when Zeus strutted into the room and upon taking his throne Cleopatra immediately draped herself across him. Consummate Zeus, well done Ants!

Round 3: Defence of Nuremburg. Somehow by virtue of knowing to put the pointy end of the sword into the other guy I was grouped with the guards as an experienced combatant. What I’ll take away from this game is the screams of village idiot being soundly beaten for his incompetence and insolence as we marched off from the village.

Round 4: The Gordian Knot. There were two stand out encounters here. The first was when I spied the woman who’d been awoken from cryogenic sleep earlier walking about and I popped over to hear tales of the weird and wonderful from this stranger from another galaxy. What I got instead was a heart-wrenching sob story about destroyed lives complete with a stream of tears that left me a stammering mess and agreeing to help her just to make her stop crying. Damn you Hannah!

The other was near the end of the evening when I was cornered by a young lady I’d had a passionate one night stand with years ago and had been avoiding all night. I explained how I’d realised she was too good for a crook like me and I’d taken off rather than disappoint her when she found out the truth. It turns out when I explained this she had no real problem with my shady past and we arranged a date for that Friday.

Round 5: Knightshade. With all of the setup required his game was late getting started and it took the PCs a little while to gel together but pretty soon we a (dis)functional adventuring party. I naturally fell into the role of second in command to the dashing hero Fitz and my attempts to reason with the various opponents we encountered met with little success. It was my unintended marriage to the village butcher Nancy when she washed my hands that provided the most memorable moments. After all of my attempts to weasel out of my nuptials on various technicalities failed I was forced to do a runner while she wasn’t looking.

Round 6: Boffo’s Birthday Bash. The final game of the con and also my favourite. Thank you Donna for such a fantastic character setup; I’m usually cast as the straight man so it was a treat playing such a farcical character for a change. From start to finish this game was filled with great moments but as others have already mentioned the highlight would have to be when my best friend Spinner and I inadvertently ruined the birthday boy Boffo’s proposal. After an evening of tumultuous events we were both exhausted and more than a little tipsy when someone mentioned they’d heard that Boffo was planning to kill the young lady he was walking in the garden with. We immediately sprinted off to save our dear chum from making a terrible mistake, with the rest of the guests in hot pursuit. So right in the middle of his proposal we came barreling up and threw ourselves between them screaming at the top of our lungs for him to spare her. Awkward.

I know. As your psychiatrist I thought this was brilliant. Especially when you talked to me about it straight after a conversation with my new daughter-in-law wherein she was incredibly apologetic that she hadn’t recognized you.

Two games stood out to me. The Bell and Forgotten gods.

The Bell was creepy! I loved the idea that I was this old school spacecraft pilot who longed to be connected with the ship while the rest of the crew and passengers slept was cool. The mood lighting and soundtrack were AWESOME.

As for Fogotten gods, I loved playing the part of ape-men, but I particulary had fun being a stygian soldier armed with a dagger and carving up the players while suffering NO damage until Tiggers character made me run away like a coward, and I was promptly skewered by an over-zealous fellow stygian soldier was priceless.
