FAQ on what constitutes a combat-safe item in a LARP?

Do we have one?

Had a look round this BBS and on the NZLARPS website and couldn’t find anything.

Personally I’m primarily interested in armour, shields, clothing and other accoutrements here, not weapons, but information on weapons doesn’t seem to be readily available either.

Each larp has its own safety standards, and they’re largely word-of-mouth.

In terms of shields the general trend is to not allow wooden or metal, even if padded, because of the weight.

For shields, armour and costume the common-sense thing is to avoid having hard and/or sharp spikes or edges that might impact people.

Weapons is a big topic. Not too heavy or hard-hitting, avoid wooden and metal parts even on the hilt or pommel. It’s somewhat subjective on the part of the weapon-checker.

Common materials for sheilds is layers of coraflute (realestate/election sign material) with fabric/foam coverings/edging. There are threads on this topic around on this forum.
