Fantasy larp - do you need it?

Medieval fantasy larp: is it the cat’s pajamas?

  • I’m only interested in medieval fantasy larp
  • I hope there is always fantasy larp, but I want to play other stuff too
  • I’m a bit sick of fantasy larp and mostly want other genres
  • I have no interest in fantasy larp, but I’ll play if it is the only option or my mates drag me along
  • I won’t play fantasy larp

I think there’s a general expectation that when Mordavia winds down, there will be other fantasy around, including at least one campaign. Fantasy is quite a dominent genre in roleplaying in general. NZLARPS has a lot of fantasy larp equipment that it has inherited from Mordavia, and there’s an assumption that it will get used for other projects.

I’m curious about your peoples’ attitude to fantasy larp as opposed to other genres. For you, is medieval fantasy the main genre and everything else is extra? Or is everything equal, but you still want the option of fantasy? Or are you a bit sick and tired of fantasy?

I voted the second option.

Fantasy larp will always be there, beceause with that genre, you can achieve impossible things, just because the setting allows it. Magic, Fantasy Creatures, the whole she-bang.

Together with the above, fantasy gives the opportunity not to think about real live for a moment. No taxes, no traffic lights, no social obligations. In fantasy larp, you can have a wonderful weekend, without worrying what to do.

I;m not saying this isn’t so in other settings, but an event like the terrorrist night, where you guys blew up the AST, is just so much more equal to every day’s happenings. Ok, you don’t blow up a sky tower every other night, but you can’t completely go into the game, yelling at people that the tower blew up, while they go: No they didn’t, look! It’s right there.

You’ll be wearing a jacket with long sleeves within no-time-at-all. Go along with the nice docter in the white jacket…

I’m open for a lot of things, really, but fantasy will stay on number 1 for now.

The reason fantasy works is because larp guns suck and people like whacking each other.

what if we whack each other with guns?

I look at Larping as way of exploring aspects of life that you would not normally be involved in (outside Iraq or a really bad acid trip).

so for me it all of the above, i would like to see fantasy, military simulations, political pot boilers, or being stuck on an island and talking like a pirate.

i think we should continue to push the boundries of what “is” larpable.

The vast majority so far have voted that they always want to have fantasy larps around to play in. Hardly surprising given that many people on this board have come from a fantasy larp background - I’m sure a poll of the wider larp community would come out with a less one-sided result.

Is the direction that the development of the ex-Warhammer larp campaign is taking appreciated, or would you like to see something else around in terms of fantasy larp?

More generally I guess, what sort of fantasy larp do you want?

Not to replace mordavia in such a way but I definitely think that people need a medieval fantasy larp around to keep them happy. We just LIKE that sort of thing. I like the medieval more than the fantasy even. Perhaps a different campaign but a similar sort of thing? Pagan vs. christian wars would be interesting… Player against player wars. You could have the fantasy in the Pagan.

Most of all I will miss Motu Moana. I fuckin love that place eh.

its on the proposed moter way route, or at east some of it is.
