Event Announcement - Medieval Tournament - Sat 20th January

Let all men* of noble birth obey the call to arms of Arthur Pendragon, undoubted king of Briton.

Tourney, war and quest have taken a heavy toll on the knights of Briton. Thus does Arthur Pendragon, blessed king of the Britons seek another knight to sit at his round table. Upon Saturday the 20th day of January at noon there shall be a tournament to find a new companion. This tournament shall be held upon the summit of Mt Albert on the opposite side to the archery targets.

This tournament shall be fought as follows:

Item - as it is ill to fight only for the advancement of oneself, all combatants shall fight for the love of a lady, the winner will crown their lady love “The Queen of Love and Beauty”. Both the combatant and their consort will present themselves to The King and be found suitable and of noble birth.

Item - as this is a tournament of peace, it will be fought with wooden weapons and on foot, the better to judge the man and not the cost of his destrier.

Item - all combatants must be armed and armed in a manner pleasing to the Kings marshals**, with a helm of steel, well padded and attached firmly to the head. Also, with a sturdy padded coat, and cuisses of steel.

Item - let all that come to fight make a donation of $25*** for the loan of their armour, which shall help to fund the local militia. Let them post their announcement that the will fight here, so suitable armour may be found for them. Let their height, and build be posted also, such that the armour may be suitable.

Item - let all who come to watch bring food to share, such as a loaf of bread, a wedge of cheese, a roasted chicken or a flagon of ale, so that those who watch may do so at their ease. Also, stools, blankets or cushions as is their want.

Thus is the wish of Arthur Pendragon, King of the Britons.

* If any women wish to try out some combat they are welcome to disguise themselves as men for this tournament.

** This will be fought in accordance with the SCA rules for heavy combat
however, it’s for all the larpers who want to try out SCA combat and anyone who is already authorised will not be admitted to the lists.
*** Any profits will be donated to the Auckland University Medieval Guild.

This is the invite for people who want to try out SCA combat.

It is open to anyone here who wants to have a go at SCA combat.

All welcome, but if you ARE authorised already, you will NOT be allowed to fight.

Two questions. :stuck_out_tongue:

 1. If you are a metal weopons fighter but have never fought SCA style before can you still enter?

 2. If you are a woman pretending to be a man, do you still have to fight for a lady?

Either way Im still going to come and watch what an excellent idea.

Cheers

Nikki

Yes you can. The only prohibition is against authorised SCA fighters. People who’ve tried SCA combat before but not authorised may enter. People who have done steel or boffer combat are very welcome.

Yes, Arthur is a romantic. However, the lady could just be your sister.

There are also lots of other positions I need people for: heralds, squires, marshals etc.

Or it could be a man disguised as a woman…

thats your cue Walter. :smiling_imp:

What you need to bring to fight:

 • Sturdy footwear that covers the ankles (ideally leather boots)
 • Fitted leggings (stretch cotton tights are ideal)
 • Groin protection. A cricket box in a supporter is the minimum for a male but a marshal arts box is better. These are available from the marshal arts shop near the top of Queen street (males about $25, females about $20). Do not wear boxers horts with a cricket box, it doesn’t work.

I have a couple of old cricket boxes that are available to lend people. :open_mouth: They have never been washed. :smiling_imp:

SCA combat is about as rough as rugby, in a different kind of way. You need reasonable upper body strength (enough to hammer in nails and open jars).

I don’t have any very large suits of armour available.

I currently have two and a half suits of armour lined up for this. I will have at least four suits available, possibly as many as six.

In terms of sizes, I have small (my size) and medium but nothing really large. Tall slim people will be fine, but anybody really solid I don’t have body armour that will fit them.

Okay, I’m back from holiday and I have a minimum of four sets of armour sorted out for this.

Book early, book often!

Okay, make that five and three quarter suits of armour.

I’m in. For some reason, Beccah finds it appealing that I fight for her love in order that she be crowned Queen of Love and Beauty…

I’m 5’10" and of medium build.

Caveat: My work is at the bleeding end of a trouble-laden release cycle, and I may be required to attend work on the day of the tourney, much as it chagrins. Confirmation of this will be known by Thursday. Said risk is a rated as possible rather than probable.

sigh that’s so romantic

Can I turn up in medieval garb and watch?

I was just at a joust. With horses. And athletic young men looking damn fine on horseback, too.

that was this weekend? In Taupo, right?

Hi Derek
Just as a point of interest, what would the set-up cost be for someone wishing to join the SCA group? What would I need and what would it cost me? I believe we have a group of said people somewhere near Hamilton?
This question has some cross-over with the armouring questions I am hammering at you in the gear forum too I guess.

There is a group in Hamilton (www.cluain.sca.org.nz) and they are very lucky to have an excellent armourer (Fulk) who helps people build armour for themselves. They would have one of the highest average standards of armour of any group in NZ.

They are very welcoming and always keen to get new members. Phone them up and invite yourself over, they’d love to see you.

I’m not sure how much they’re paying for armour, but it isn’t much. Depending on how much you make and how much you purchase, armour will cost anywhere from $200 (cost of materials) to $2000 (fully finished). I imagine if you purchase the difficult bits (helm/elbows & knees) and build the rest (gambeson/sword/shield/body/thigh armour) you can spend about $400

However, most groups have some loaner kit you can use while you get started.

yes - please do

I feel sorry for all the ladies out there that so few gentlemen hold them high enough in their esteem that they would not risk a tournament to display their love for them.

Are you not loved? Are you not beautiful? Then the one who holds you in high regard should prove this love by force of arms!

The tourney is four days away and we currently have 2.5 couples booked:

Niki + ???
Paul + Maggee
Mike + Beccah

If I don’t get FOUR couples for this, I’ll be canceling. I’d like at least SIX couples if possible. There must be some blokes out there who wish to win a crown for their ladies. There were certainly more people who put their hand up earlier…

Niki, Lucy is coming along if you need a lady to fight for. 'though, her accent at the last game would suggest she’s a bit of a peasant

The Taupo joust is sometime in February. There were men from Norway and France! Pretty men…

I’m keen just trying to find a lady to fight for.

any takers?
