Equipment wish list

So, projects and associates of NZLARPS: what equipment would your larp like the most, especially gear you think might be useful to other larps too? NZLARPS can accumulate the gear for your larp to use.

  • Mordavia would like in-game coins. They could be generic so that they’d also work for any other larps that need coins. There’s a discussion on buying blank discs as a basis for coins here: mordavia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1246
  • Flexible, battery operated lighting equipment that can be used in outdoor settings

  • Small scale mains operated lights, enough to set moods and create shadows etc

  • Small, quiet generator

Og needs some more weapons (and perhaps fur costumes?)

I’ve read that airbrushing is a good way to get body paint on. Apparently some big larps in the UK use airbrushes to mass-paint lots of characters.

This would be really useful for larps like Mordavia where you want large groups of white-faced ghouls quickly, or Warhammer for hordes of greenskinned goblins. Applying facepaint with hands or sponge is slow, messy, and often gets average results.

Airbrushing can also be good for finely detailed and smooth bodyart, not just bulk painting.

Maybe NZLARPS could consider acquiring an airbrush and compressor for body painting. Not cheap, but could well be worthwhile in the long run. Second hand might get it cheaper.

Large tubs of cheap cosmetics, face paints etc.

Trailer with a cage

For a trailer, I see no reason why hire of one cannot be afforded within the budget, particularly for weekend games.

You’re probably looking at $30 per trip i.e. $60 per weekend game. It’s a hassle organising a trailer and you have to take it back when you’ve finished transporting the gear - can’t just take the trailer to the location and leave it there.

The ideal would be to part-own one with someone so NZLARPS could have access to it when required. A good one 2nd hand is about $1500. Anyway, this is a wish list

  • Full rubber body suit for those wet nights

A 48hr hire (enough for a weekend game) would be $60, so if you pick it up from somewhere near your home no problems. You could hire a trailer 25 times for the cost of buying one…

However, I do agree that owning one would be useful (it could then be used every time). Maybe this is something we could ask for funding for from places like the Lion foundation and so on?

Don’t forget if we own a trailer we have to store that too

At the Gathering they use the airbrush things… To be honest, I didn’t like the all out result. The mass paints left out the details that just give the last perfectioning to the monsters.

Sure, I understand that if you need 500 orcs you want a quick job, but still, with 4 or 5 good painters you can achieve a lot aswell…

Then again, if you look at the number of people attending different events,(Gathering; 4000 compared to Mordavia 60-80?) time is of the essence…

Still: I’m pro individual attention in painting, because highlights are important.

Here’s a simple one: belts.

Mordavia used to have a bag full of belts (that had been left behind at games), but then the bag went missing at the Perilous Paths event. Ever since I’ve missed that bag more than just about any other thing we’ve lost. So many times you need to throw a belt onto someone in medieval/fantasy larp, and having to improvise all the time sucks.

Would be good to have some more belts that can be used by crew or lent to players. Wouldn’t be that hard to pick some vaguely suitable ones up from 2nd hand stores, or to make some. Buckles are cheap, and belts are easy to make. A few wide belts in there would be cool, a nice belt can really make a costume.

I have an aunty who owns a belt factory. I’ll see if I can pick up a pile of seconds next time I see her.

Sweet!

Um, while we don’t have a bag of belts, we do have a box of belts. I’ll show it to you at the next Gear Reckoning ™.

Oh. Haven’t seen that.

The bag had around 15 belts in it, andI’m sure it went missing. But more than happy if we’ve gathered replacements.
