Dreams are free

To make it fly, it’d have to be a business. And like the advert for the land suggests, theres lots of opportunity for that.

I would suggest you could run a bunch of activities out of the area, such as the metioned mountain biking, climbing, horse trekking, kayaking, and see it run as a kind of backpackers venue. On top of that, its stock grazing land, so sheep or cattle grazing would bring in coin. It wouldn’t necessarily be as productive as a dedicated farm but it might make it viable.

Its not far from some facilities that offer very similar options (the Wharepapa limestone is fairly popular) so it could potentially be self supporting.

That and, maybe rather than just cabins, we build a multi purpose village with an eye for larping and advertise it as an international larp destination with regular events through our prime season. Again, dreams are free.

And of course, we could build in some false ruins, a watch tower on the crest of that awesome hill (or is that too crass?), foundations for tent villages, a pallisade fort. Combined with some native plantings of fast growing natives like manuka and the like and it’d be picture perfect.

If you can get the other 546. I’ll put in a share.

My idea of how to spend lottery money was to build a castle, so have thought about it a bit. I was thinking somewhere near Island Block - closer to Auckland and main highway for egress, but this land is very picturesque. FYI I’m an architect, so designing buildings is a fun thing for me.

I figured there would need to be a caretaker/admin manager / farmer sort of person living there, and so would need to be a lifestyle choice as much as anything. Some permanent building for kitchen/hall/bathrooms would be almost mandatory, (because it does rain at most inconvenient times and we modern people don’t like rain) and somewhere for said caretaker to live.

There was an old discussion started by Ryan along a similar vein (board index/archive/historic venue), for those who haven’t dug that far.

It’s still an interesting concept, but someone with spare time and business acumen needs to prepare a business plan with some real costs. Maybe the week before a Wolfgangs games is not the time for this (I made a list of things to do and am now now freaking out - crewing involves so little preparation - and I already had my costume …). However if the business plan looked viable we could be interested in a financial investment.

Land is expensive, and compounding interest will probably kill any hope for something like nzLarps doing something like this.

However, if you think a little outside the box, it may be possible to get something done.

There are many camps around already, that have buildings with loos and bunks and kitchens already there. It may be possibly to look at building “larp specific” structures in those camps.

The SCA in the US build stuff like this each year for a battle… (because like NZ, and unlike Europe, they don’t have real ones to use)
