Deadwood

I’ve just finished watching the first series of the TV show Deadwood on DVD, and it’s awesome. If you liked the gritty old west of movies like Unforgiven, this series will totally hit the spot for you. The characters are deep and unpredictable right from the first episode.

Oddly, it also kinda fills the hole left by Firefly. Ensemble cast of characters with mixed morals in difficult situations, and an old west flavour. No spaceships but.

Any chance it has the Joss Whedon-esque sense of humor? That’s my favourite thing about Firefly. I’ve heard the language is somewhat over the top, although that’s not always a problem.

I so wish they hadn’t canned Firefly. Probably that’s what will make it an enduring classic though, like Faulty Towers, which only had how many episodes? 6? 12? not many, anyway.

Yah, the humour is not that dissimilar. It’s very character-based, and the characters are portrayed with a lot of sympathy even when they’re arseholes.

The foul language is hilarious, if you find that sort of thing funny. Me and Beck just watched twelve episodes in a week and now she’s calling me a motherfucking cocksucker when peeved at me.

If the rating is a concern then it’s worth noting that it’s fairly graphic too. A lot of violence, nudity, and sex.

sounds good. :stuck_out_tongue: luckily my kids are still at the “Blue’s Clues” “Care Bears” and going to bed at 7pm stage.

Hmmm… I might have to watch the development of a bad case of potty mouth though, huh?

I’ve heard good things about it, and enjoyed the episode I watched. A friend said that the scriptwriters had made a lot of effort to writing in iambic pentameter, and other such poetical devices, which he loved.

:open_mouth:

It is ironic that such a great artistic effort is wrapped up with such rough flavour. But the contrasts are part of the appeal. The arc of the story is awesome, the writing is outstanding, the material is often shitty and nasty. It’s a bit like a beautifully taken photo of a hanging.

But there are some likeable characters too… or mostly, usually, likable.
