Question for people who use daggers in larps: what exactly you are doing with them?
I mean - what ways of using a dagger you have? I’m gonna use the daggers later but just thinking of situations in which they’ll be appropriate, as in combat with something big and scary sword usually seems like a preferable option.
So, you cut the throats? Or participate in dagger duels? Or you are very skilled and can go against a big monster with just a dagger?
I’ve seen quite a lot of people carrying daggers, but never really had opportunity to see how they use them.
Thanks.

I almost never use them in battles, but they are fantastic when you’re starting a fight indoors or when you’re supposed to be unarmed.

When I was looking for the amulets at St Wolfgang’s I decided to search some of the rooms (with a GM there). Rather than take a kite shield and sword into a small room, I took a sap and a dagger.

If you’re in a position of trust, you can get at least 3-4 blows in with a dagger before your enemy gets their sword out.

However, a sap is probably better than a dagger in most circumstances, even if your enemy is wearing a helmet. After all, how hard can it be to convince someone to remove their helmet?

It is better to have one and have no need of it, than have your last words be recorded as “Where is my *&^%$&&%$# Dagger”

A single dagger, by itself, not so useful in a stand up fight.
Dagger with other weapon, pretty good duelist combo.
Dagger for roleplaying purposes… very useful…
2 daggers and sneaky roguery = nasty quick death, especially if you have backstab in the system you use.
And any situation where swinging a long sword is difficult.
As previously said, they’re easy to carry, so why not? Sometimes it’s all you have left… better that than naught.

Daggers are great!

Never underestimate the usefulness of daggers. You don’t use them often, but when you need them there is no substitute.

On the rare occasions that I actually get to play my character I carry a rapier, a shield and my two daggers Spit and Spite.

Spit is carried visibly on the belt and is useful in the second hand if I ever get caught without my shield. i.e. when I am looting treasure or resting.

Spite is my hidden dagger. This is in case I am captured or have to surrender my visible weapons. Also it means that I can appear unarmed and still stab somebody before they can draw.

In combination they are used where the fighting is close range, ie indoors. They are extremely useful against a single long weapon such as a two handed sword or a spear. In our system we generally do not allow one on one combat between people, each with brace of daggers as the combat is so fast that no one can score it.

In Live Role Play daggers are light and are one of the few things that can easily be carried in scabbards. Depending on the system, they can be poisoned, thrown and used to assassinate. They can be held in hand and still be concealed. When you need a dagger there are few substitutes.

Also, most game systems do not allow you to fight bare handed. If you do not have a dagger, then there is no way that you can possibly defend yourself in hand to hand combat. You are totally, utterly, completely defenceless and at the mercy of your opponent. As an adventurer would you prefer this, or a dagger so that at least you can attempt to defend yourself?

My advice, always carry a couple on your person and more if you play a thief type character.

In ‘Nibelungen’, the stowaway’s dagger came in uber handy. He was held prisoner on board the ship, which was about to be stolen by renegade Shikadi. Suddenly, either through the ship radio or the command keypad, the power was shut down. He was then told(at gunpoint) to get the ship up and running, so went to where he had previously stashed his dagger - under the pretence of turning power back on. The stowaway pulled out the dagger and slew the Shikadi holding him at gunpoint. He then took the deceased’s XR45 PULSE LASER RIFLE and was able to eliminate the remainder of the renegade threat.

daggers pwn.

Yeah… But not as much as XR45 PULSE LASER RIFLE’s.

I’ve fought in LARP battle with a dagger. With buckler, it’s a short, skirmishing combination, but it can work OK. Especially if you are fighting someone with a spear, or a whacking great hammer or axe that swing slowly. Or you can use sword and dagger (better if the dagger has a crosshilt).

Lin fought with just dagger and buckler at the most recent Mordavia wedding game between Danae and the half-elven Prince. Against orcs. That was fun, and didn’t get hit more than twice, and even killed a couple of orcs.

Yeah… But not as much as XR45 PULSE LASER RIFLE’s.[/quote]

ugh cyber goths…

anyway, daggers are good for one on one disputes where you can be all drama and hold it to their neck or wat ever, more a 1920s nightmare circle flare thing rather than big combat games.

these shoes suck!

Patience, young grasshopper. Without his dagger he would have no XR45 PULSE LASER RIFLE.

At least if there ended up being soft foam weapons in my preciously crafted sci-fi game they still ended up being used as a means to the XR45 PULSE LASER RIFLE.

Aw. Don’t worry, I’m sure it was a chromium-alloy holographic electric force-blade dagger, or something suitably technological. Not an ordinary shiv

Maybe it was a FK69 FORCE LASER KNIFE (cunningly disguised as a poorly carved lump of foam)?

Indeed, as sergeant Zim would say it.

“he cannot use his pulse laser rifle IF you disable his hand…MEDIC!”
