So, I’ve been sent my character. Now I’m wondering how to costume for it. Any suggestions on the civilian dress of the late C19th US frontier?
Watch the TV show Deadwood?
Entertainment and costuming education at the same time.
Also: it’s a bit like Victorian, if that helps.
I can’t afford to buy stuff from these guys but I look at their costumes for ideas: westernemporium.com/western.php
There are tons of Western movies and tv shows to be mined for clothes ideas. Your average civilian homesteader wasn’t too concerned with fashion, just function, so styles didn’t change too quickly or drastically. Blue jeans were in California in the 1850’s and thereafter (though be careful of the cut), suspenders seem to have been more common than belts. Hats were a necessity as were bandanas/kerchiefs.
Coolness, we’re now up to the wonderful stage of wailing “But I have nothing to wear!” [rubs fingers in avaricious glee]
Have spent some time looking for Western style patterns, and have the following website suggestions:
buckaroobobbins.com/
westernersoutfitter.com/
simplicity.com/ (try patterns 2851, 2887, 2890, 2881, 2895, 3727)
mccallpattern.mccall.com/ (try patterns M4745, M6140, M9423)
Yes, I have an obvious bias towards pretty dresses for girls, but there’s some stuff for the menfolk in there as well.
“Buckaroo bobbins” - how cute!
In case anyone is interested in leatherwork, Tandy Leather Factory does some amazing starter kits, their belt blanks are cool and their range of buckles is kick ass.
Sorry about the expensive bit though - it’s all quality, and some of you might recognise a few of the conchos from the Seeker sale. We used a lot of their stuff!

Agh! Moo! I’ll never have money again if you keep posting links like that!
