Costume designer/seamstress wanted

Hey everybody. I’m in a little bit of a bind.
With the Ravenholme game fast approaching, and my competency in matters of costume design sadly lacking, I was wondering if anyone would like to accept a commission for Louis’ next costume.

The details are here

I’d really appreciate any help I can get.
(Don’t send mail to the hackermail address, it’s an msn and I don’t check it)

Hey everyone, I’m still looking for people to help. If I don’t get this costume by the Ravenholme game, Louis will be conducting everyone wearing hired or out-of-style dress.

Remember, there is a negotiable commission fee involved.

If I didn’t also have exams…
Mind you, a lot of what oyu want can be fudged/borrowed.
Pants are just pants after all. If I remember, your brother has a ruffled shirt, like the one your after (and isn’t coming to the game). Cameron has a frock coat he might be willing to let you borrow, if it fits (he also isn’t coming).

The really shitty thing about the whole situation is that if I had a pattern to work from, I could probably do it all myself. I have both a sewing machine and an overlocker, and can get all the material I need.

Really? I’d pay for some good designs.

You have a sewing machine AND AN OVERLOCKER???
Why is it that every time I’m wanting some kind of machine/equipment it turns out you have it…
Perhaps the universe is secretly granting my wishes behind my back to SOMEONE ELSE.
As for patterns - the tricky thing is not following them, but adjusting them to suit your build. I tend to forget them and just figure stuff out myself, but if you want patterns go have a browse in a fabric store - what you’re looking for isn’t too unmodern, and they have costume patterns anyway.
If you’re not very experienced at sewing, I don’t think you’ll get very far in the time before the game (esp with exams). I suggest maybe sewing one or two items, and fudging the rest in post…er, from your own/someone else’s wardrobe.

I’d get patterns from the store if I thought they’d fit what I’m wanting. As it stands, I don’t have the time to go pattern shopping at the moment, and I’m looking for designs which include fabric choices, so I don’t mess that up.

I’m offering the job because while I have equipment and money, I do not in fact have any costume designing experience allowing me to generate or modify patterns.

If push comes to shove? I just need the coat. I can probably hire out the jacket.

Even to do just the coat, if it’s gonna be any good, would take about from now to the game for anyone but a really experienced sewer.
Took me two weeks to make my Lady Capulet dress and that was cutting corners, no pattern and sewing nearly every day.

Fabric shops will have books with costume sections. It may take a bit of mixing and matching but you should be able to get what you want. Trousers are pretty easy - just get a pyjama pattern and make them in a more solid fabric.

There’s this shirt pattern that’s taken my fancy:

Finding a decent pirate coat pattern is hard, I’ve been looking, and not finding anything particularly good. I own that Butterick pattern for the priest’s robe but haven’t had the courage (or the inspiration, really) to give it a go yet.

The trick with patterns is to sign up to be a VIP member of Spotlight, and wait till they have one of their $6 sales, since patterns normally go for about $18 each.

Oh, and when working with a bought pattern when you don’t really know anything about sewing, follow all the instructions. Those instructions are golden until you know what you’re doing.

Oh, and some patterns for the jacket:
