Committee Meeting Feb 2010-03-17

Present: Anna, Rowena, Blair, Cameron, Gaffy, Michael
Apologies: Adam, Muppet

Finances

Looking good. There are some cheques still to go out. There is outstanding money to be deposited. Anna is to follow up on this.

Past LARPS

Star Wars happened. Thread on diatribe about it.
Requiem happened.

Wellington had several LARPS
Black Hart of Camelot was good, Everyone enjoyed.
Kapcom was awesome. Reunion was great, Anna to rerun in Auckland 2011
Cameron states that people in Wellington are awesome.

Anna started creating connections with Christchurch LARPers and talked to an Aussie guy about Canberra. Next year she’s bringing business cards.

Upcoming LARPS

Battlecry – Breakout Day, Mary Celeste, Jade Empire, Bad Dreams and Orcball.
New Horizons – will be awesome. Not that I’m biased or anything.
Chrono Continuum – End of Feb for Character submissions
NZLARPS – Moving the earth to fir in all your bloody LARPS. Too many LARPS and not enough weekends. We think NZLARPS should look at purchasing some extra weekends in a month. Maybe 7 or 8 weekends would be good.
One Night In Heaven
St Wolfgang’s Vampire Hunters
Masquerade in Fleet St in Wellington - sold out with more female players than expected.
Nexus
Multiverse

Project Proposal

Zombie LARP –Michael Andrew

To be run in September. Michael has a teaser trailer! How cool is that. Plus his paperwork is in depth and awesome. He’s raising the bar for project proposals.

Anna proposes we accept the project proposal. Gaffy 2nds. Accepted unanimously.

SGM – 3rd March

Webstuff

Minor overhaul of diatribe.
Michael Andrew can help with switching stuff over and get web hosting from his work. NZ based with NZ tech support.
Anna proposes, Rowena 2nds we accept this web hosting proposal on proviso we can get web hosting @ $30 month. Unanimously accepted.
Blair to liaise with Michael.

De-projecting Grand Battle
All agreed. Grand Battle is no longer project.

Traffic Fine

Anna has mailed letter.

Insurance for Trailer

Rowena will arrange some quotes after New Horizons as she is too busy until then.

Next Meeting 17th March 2010-03-17
Meeting closed 10pm.

Are these the minutes from last night? The title says Feb.

Why are we going to pay $360 a year for something we currently get for free (I think), and which has been reliable?

I have heard an argument occasionally that the current hosting doesn’t allow us to do some things. However, it’s unclear what these things are, and whether we have actually tried to do them on the current hosting or just assumed it would be hard because the hosting is donated by Craig. Who has, as I recall, expressed his bewilderment that we’d turn down free hosting. I had no problems with the hosting when I did the recent upgrade of the forum software.

Even if we had a good reason to change, $360 a year is not cheap. It’s likely to be ex GST, making it $405 a year inc GST. Personally I’d rather the society spend that money on something like props, not on re-buying something we currently get for free. Plus, if our contact at this hosting company leaves it, any special deal we’re getting may evaporate (this is what happened with the Mordavia hosting). And we don’t know how reliable the hosting is, reliability among NZ web hosting companies is variable.

If we really have to change, we could host through someone like Go Daddy for more like $110 a year. It’s reliable and flexible, and that price would give us a deluxe plan with 150 GB space, 1,500 GB transfer, 500 email accounts, and 25 MySQL databases. It’s the world’s biggest host, so it’s here to stay, and my experience with the administration tools has been excellent.

Changing will also probably involve a period where not everything works as well as it currently does. Things like the various degrees of FTP access, the email accounts, and the databases will need to be set up again.

This idea seems a bit undercooked to me.

Nope. I was bad. These minutes are from Feb. Last night’s minutes are up now. http://diatribe.co.nz/t/committee-minutes-march-2010/3812/1

Muppet’s action points this month include starting a thread to discuss our web hosting needs. Michael Andrew is no longer working at that company so that idea got put on the back burner.

Sometimes my powers of backwards prognostication amaze even myself.
