Combat training

We’ve had some drama training with NZLARPS, now how about some combat training?

I’m thinking we could ask some of the good combat teachers that are around in Auckland to run a series of workshops using larp weapons. Starting out with the basics of combat and building up to group tactics. Maybe with each session ending in duels and group fights to practise what’s been learned and end on a fun note.

I know a number of folks have done metal weapon or SCA training, but I reckon soft-weapon training would appeal to the wider group, and would allow full-speed and group combats more easily without so much safety training to start with.

Also, if it took place somewhere moderately public it might attract more members.

I train Tuesday evenings and Sunday at noon with the SCA. The style of combat we do is different to most of the metal weapons clubs because much of our technique is based on delivering powerfull strikes. If a strike doesn’t leave a welt/bruise on an unarmoured location it’s probably to soft.

If you want to improve your larp/boffer combat skills, I don’t believe SCA combat is what you want to learn.

However, if you want to learn a martial art that will teach you:

  1. to defend your head
  2. how to deliver a blow that will actually put your opponent on the ground
    I can help!

The “touch of death” type combat practiced by many of the metal weapon clubs is probably more appropriate for larp because strikes are pulled at the point of impact rather than being powered through the opponent.

If anybody wishes to try out SCA combat I am very happy to loan them the equipment and run them through as many lessons as they want.

Just be aware that if you try this stuff at a Mordvaia game people will growl at you

The main reason I don’t play PCs is I don’t want to fight competitively in larp games.

At this point I feel obliged to cast my gauntlet on the ground and issue a challenge to the comunity as a whole. To meet me on the field, to fight until one or the other has had enough, in armoured combat armed with clubs in the SCA style. I can provide all the weapons and armour you will need.

I’m happy to face small groups as well, though I doubt I can armour more than 2-3 at a time

If people are wanting a free venue to train at some Larp combat, there is more than enough space at the Barracks.

Now that the weather is getting nicer it would be fun to have this sort of thing here in our massive backyard. Also all but one of the 6 flatmates are LARPers.

Now we just need to find a suitable teacher. I think Steve would be a good teacher, he knows group combat tacktics and he has been LARPing for many many years. Ill have to ask him if hed be willing to do something like this.

If like Ryan says we want to go more public with our vebue we could do it at any park, in fact there is a nice one across the road from sword and shield :stuck_out_tongue:

Patch would be good value too, he’s excellent at getting everyone involved and making it fun.

The more experienced & trained fighters might be able to help out as tutors for the newbies, who always need lots of attention.

Actually, there kind of is a LARP weapon training club, it’s called SKIRMISH…

And it’s lots and lots of fun. And cheap. Also, extra-cheap for NZLARPS members.

Dueling and fighting is not the same thing as training, in my opinion. It’s valuable, but it’s different from being taught technique.

I’m keen to help out, if you like
