Carrying your sword on your back

I’ve found on St Wolfgang that my sword takes too much space around my hips, people bump into it, it bumps into walls, not even mentioning the ladies who were scarily jumping up when it occasionally touched their… whatever.

You can see in all those fantasy movies people carrying the swords on their backs, not on the hips. How possible is it in real life? My arm is definitely shorter than my sword so I can’t imagine how I would be able to unscabbard it, plus I suspect it might need some space around to actually move it that way.

Still, the idea looks too tempting, so before abandoning hope I wanna ask advise from people who know better than me. If there are such ones here - what would you say?

Rather than using a scabbard to hold the sword, make a U shaped ring that allows the sword to be dropped into it but drawn by pulling it out the gap in the ring. A two inch diameter ring should allow the sword to be dropped in easily and if it’s made from something springy, like plastic, you should be able to wrench it through the gap without damaging the weapon.

It is quite possible, can be quite tricky the longer the sword is. Tho I have seen someone rig up a holder for 1.5m sword that worked but did have a few issues
method used kinda depends on the costume you gonna wear

Here is a quick sketch. Basically, attach this to a strap that goes over your shoulder. If you want to , you can put more than one on so the sword doesn’t move around as much.

You’ll need to do something to stop the U falling out, but I’m sure you’re up to that.

Steve made a brilliant system for carrying a sword on your back, I will try to exlain it as i dont know how to put sketches up in posts.

one belt goes around your waist and that belt has a ring on it for the tip of the sword, a second belt goes across the body and down the back and that has a ring on the top which sits around the shoulder, which holds the blade of the sword.

when you wish to draw the sword you shrug the belt off your shoulder dropping it down to your waist and you draw it like a normal scabbard.

it holds the sword well and there is no way it can fall out if the belts are firm enough.

this is the other way, the scabbard only holds half the blade, and there are two hooks above the scabbard to hold the cross guard which you cant see in the drawing

The U-shaped ring would definitely be for someone more accurate than me, as I would definitely manage to loose my sword from it  Though the idea itself looks interesting.

Depending of the whole thing on the costume - oh, so much true!

Steve’s method is brilliant indeed! I want it.

Another possibility you may wish to look at is a baldric rather than a belt. It makes the sword very easy to take off and put down and allows it to sit higher.

Looking at the picture it doesn’t sit higher, or do you mean it can actually be adjusted, well, moving the whole thing up and down?

Definitely will be more flexible rather than just on the belt :unamused:

And looks cool!

the problem with baldrics is if tey are not fixed down by a second belt around the waist they will fly all over the place when you are running, and you run a lot in these games, for some strange reason.

they also still suffer from the same problems of a scabbard, but are better than shoving your sword through your belt. but then anything is better than that.

blush Stop making me feel stupid, I forgot my loop for the sword when was rushing to the game this time.
In fact, I forgot the sword too  But remembered it the moment I locked the door, so could return for it.

Running a lot is indeed a point, weapon must be attached securely.

How Jack Sparrow was running all around with his baldric? Is it because it’s a movie? He had it really cool.

By the way, talking of baldric: what else you can attach to it? It can carry more than just a sword, can it? Does make sense for such games like Wolfgang, where you run around with sword, stake, rosary, bible, wholy water and gods know what else…

Add loops and the front for stakes and pouches for other items.

warts, boils, other unsanitory ailments, even a piece of cheese at one point
