Camouflage: a military drama on the edge of death

It’s war. The heart of the Great War. You and a few other POWs have escaped from a hole blown in the side of your prison by an air raid bomb. Today is the third day you’ve been on the run. You should make it to safety today, but it will be a desperate struggle against the terrain and the elements.

This would be a gruelling, physical drama game in an war-time setting, unarmed. Probably about six tough hours long for only the hardest arsed LARPers we have.

Location: Karangahake Gorge - upstream.

This idea is up-for-grabs if anyone wants it at any stage of the organisation. I’m thinking $20/$30 (members/not), six players, July.

Hell yeah!!!

Gruelling and physical? I’m in. What kind of gear will we have, if any?

I’m thinking we’d rock into the army surplus store and get camo suits, then you can bring your own stuff on top of that if you wish. We’d want polyprops under that, and a few army toys, as well as essentials like first aid. Afterwards, I’d be willing to sell my gear to nzLARPS for half of its cost price so it can be used for future stuff I’ll probably be involved in.

Army stuff is tough, reusable, and stores well. This is the first of a bunch of army scenarios I have in mind, and as the gear builds up we’ll need to buy less stuff/ more exciting kit.

All the glamour of the army without the illegal wars!

Part of the ticket price would include getting there and back - which I figure is a couple of car drivers (who would be reimbursed) or someone like Scotty with a bigass car. Must get in touch with that boy and pitch.

I picture it as a “scenario LARP” that’s so all about the characters that even the GM can play.

hmm, yeah I’d be keen for that.
I havn’t done anything physical for a while, so I’d be up for it, plus I could drive people for transport and me car a hatch back - plenty of room in the back (if I take the speakers out).

I got a few ideas for it too, but I’ll talk to you about them later Craig.

I’m so in for this and can supply transport

im keen assuming i dont fracture my elbow again, and ill be one of those seeking transport from those with a car

sounds like fun  And I have a station wagon, tonnes of room

Hmm, playing German POWs escaping from camps in Scotland? That would be a new twist.

Would this be a hunter/quarry sort of LARP, with ‘reach goal or be captured/killed’?

This might require some sort of firearms or representation thereof. Would it be going over the top to notify the local constabulary of the game and content in advance so as to avoid any misconceptions?

Can I be a German?

No firearms, but the locals would be notified regardless. People would see it happening (the road follows the river, too) but probably presume it’s a military exercise. There’d be other military-type props but firearms are too dangerous/risky for this kind of thing. Those games will take a lot more careful planning

How will physical conflict and fighting happen?
Were you thinking foam rubber knives, projectiles e.g. Mordavia spell packets, or a tag-you’re-caught system?

I’m so in.

I’m pretty sure camo suits didn’t become wide spread for uniforms until after WW1. (The French were still wearing red trousers with their uniforms! They stopped because the dye was manufactured in Germany…)

Actually, running this as an overnight game would be good.

I have jack boots, does anybody have a german shepherd?

to the best of my knowledge, camo suits appeared during ww2 with the waffen SS and fallschirmjaeger units, the allies didn;t seem to pick up the idea till much later, mainly as Derek accurately said, the dye simply wasn’t available, espcecially for mass production.

Yeah new to LARP but very keen for this idea
