Hi all,
I’m looking for able crafts people to help me out a bit. I’m looking for some leather (or leather look) armor. I’m hopeless at making stuff and was wondering if someone was able to help me out.
I’ve been trawling the net and found some stuff I like the look of and wanted to know what it would cost me for one of you out there to make a Larp knockoff of some armor.
Chest and pauldrons (not fancy lower arms) and minus the chainmail

demi-gauntlets like these

and greaves like this

Let me know if you could help a hopeless crafter out.
Cheers

I could build armour like that, but I won’t.
The leather work on the armour is actually quite good. All the edging is very nice and the leather is nice quality. Unfortuantely, apart from the knee cops, there is no shaping to the leather. It’s all flat pieces of leather that has been cut out and bent (and not even hardened). There are big gaps between all the plates on the shoulders…
I’d recommend looking at actual medieval styles. I believe you’ll be happier in the long run.
Having said that, I hope to be getting some more leather in the near future…
I’ll let people know if I manage to get some.
Hi Derek,
Thanks for the feedback
Given that i wish to use the armor for LARP (or LRP here in Hamilton for Alista anyways) I’m not looking for huge authenticity as we’re not historically themed for the most part…
Have you got any links for armour styles that you think I would like or would be more realistic?
Cheers
It depends on what role you want to portray and what the rules for the armour are.
Actually, the breast and back and pauldrons are taken from a steel pattern.
They’d be almost as much work to do in leather as steel…
Hi Derek,
What I’m looking for in a set of leather is an imitation more than accuracy. It doesn’t need to do much than be representative for tag system larp’s which use light to medium contact at most using foam weapons.
I’m sure theres a big difference in making functional leather for the likes of SCA (do they use leather?) especially at the cost level…
I would in all honesty be happy with a basic leather set with chest, pauldrons demi gauntlets and greaves.
As for the leather pics I included… I believe they are an orc armor replication from LOTR

I tend to make functional armour, rather than costume arour. So, it looks plain, but it works.
I’m currently working on some for a lady in the SCA and I’ve just started the gorget, demi-gauntlets, vambraces and greaves.
I do the vambrace and demi gauntlet unattached and enclosing the whole arm so the wrist can bend and rotate fully, as per the pictures.
The tape is where the straps will go later…
I can give you a price for greaves and vambraces, cut out and hardened if you want. I don’t have time to do the straps and buckles though. However, that’s the easy bit…
Hi Derek,
If you could be give me a price for vambraces and greaves, that’d be cool.
I also intend to use the left vambrace as a combined buckler/vambrace, how hard would it be to do that for one arm? I was thinking making it just a bit beefier would do the trick?
Cheers
