Affordable Fabric Shops

Here are the details of the awesome discount fabric shop in Otara that I was telling some of the seamstresses at the sewing bee on Saturday about.

It’s called The Designer Textiles Factory Shop and it’s on Lovelock Crescent in Otara. It’s open 9:30am-4pm Mon-Fri, and 9am-1pm on Saturdays.

They have a fairly large stock, really good prices (Ravenholme scored over 55m of stuff for about $175) as well as stuff like buttons and laces and thread.

If anyone else knows anywhere to buy affordable fabric, post here!

The Stockhouse in Otahuhu and the Fabric Barn in Otahuhu (right next door to each other) on Hall Ave are also great for fabric.

They have cheap linen and indian silk for $4 and $4.50 a metre at the moment!

Of course, Geoff’s Emporium has an eclectic range of materials & buttons, on Dominion Rd, near the Valley Rd Shops, and also at Henderson - now at Lincoln Road, next to the ten pin bowling place, and what used to be Pizza Hut. I’ve found the Lincoln Road branch to have a much better range of buttons and trim, nicer lay out, and better light.

Hey Kara - these are the fabric places I mentioned in the Quest Waikato thread.

thank you Anna! next time I’m over city side, i’m going to have to make a trip to some of these places.

Kara, the Stockhouse in Otahuhu that Clare described is the one that has lotsa light transparent shiffon-like stuff of all possible colours you can imagine, most of it is $4, some are $5 or $5.50. Perfect for bellydance costumes!

Ike’s Emporium in Browns Bay is also a source of cheap material. Plus lots of ribbon/sashing. I found some nice heavy cloak-material for $3/m. They also have a good range of faux fur

…and the most glorious white feathered angel wings that are to die for…

I just found this web site which has speciality fabrics. There is a show room in Riverhead and available on-line shopping. Lots of funky chiffon, lycra velvets etc As the name suggest it is aimed for dance costumes. Not especially cheap, but something you may not find in the usual stores.

Since a lot of people recently have been sewing for Teonn and the like, I thought I’d bump this thread  Spotlight is highway robbery. These fabric places are awesome.

…If I wasn’t excited about moving to Auckland before. Sheesh!!

But on the Wellington side of things Fabrics Direct on Ghuzzne street has to-die for fabrics, and they’ve got a clearance section in the back with things between $1-$10 a meter.

In Auckland I found a fabric store across from Lynn Mall that also has a bargain fabric section in the back. I went in looking for hook and eye closures (which they didn’t have) so didn’t really scope out the fabric so I don’t know if it’s good or not. It shares the same driveway as the SaveMart by Lynn Mall.

Note: some of these may be out of date

I think these guys aren’t around anymore, the motorway bridge got extended and there’s now a concrete post where they used to be.

I’ve been there few days ago, there is linen listed as $5/m, but it may be just some specific one, as I got a bunch of linens I usually get and got charged $4/m only. Silks still $4.50/m, they have also a good range of chiffons $4 - $5.50, I think, lots of lace fabrics in colours. Their wool was usually $12, not sure how about now. That’s one of the best fabric shops in Auckland, methinks

Ooooh, chiffon you say? I might pay a visit on Saturday. I need lots of fabric, esp. chiffon, for my Al Shir-Ma costume. Thanks for the tip, Lucy.

Global Fabrics have a mailing list you can join and from time to time they will send out special invites to sales a day before they are public and other nifty things. They just sent out a $20 discount voucher off any purchase over $50… which can be used anytime in December. So if you were thinking of buying some fabric for some holiday projects over December…

If anyone would like to know more, message me and I’ll forward you the message
