Hi wonderful people,
I’m going to be running a workshop of acting techniques in Wellington this July that’s specifically designed for LARPers. If you’re interested in learning new acting techniques, polishing or practicing your current acting skills, or trying to hit new emotional notes when you perform, then this is a workshop for you.
Don’t panic
The session isn’t about embarrassing anyone or making anyone stand alone on stage having to do something they don’t want to do (unlike half the acting workshops some of us had to do in our time
No one will be rolling you ( or your stomach fat) onto the floor like fresh dough. Whether you’ve been LARPing for years or are a first timer, this session will let you take things at your own pace and will be a gentle intro into trying new things.
I won’t be giving you scenes to learn in advance (unlike the BDL One-Act Play competition – love you guys!) I would like to encourage everyone to learn one paragraph in advance of the session though, for reasons other than expanding your memory of learning lines. (More on that in the survey to come).
What the session will cover
This session will be about growing self-awareness, finding or focussing on the areas you tend to avoid when performing and (hopefully) helping to strengthen or develop those. It will also be a time to try new methods to help get the most from your roleplaying and to push your skills further still. If there’s enough interest and time then I’d like to go over a range of the schools of acting from Stanislavski, Meisner, Elia Kazan and Lee Strasberg, as well as some more contemporary thinking in Physical theatre that’s developed since the Method took prominence.
If people are interested in attending then I’d also really like to survey your specific interests and needs to make sure everyone can take away as much from the session as they were hoping to gain from it.
What’s required
The session will be a mix of working in large groups, small groups, and individually. We’ll probably also do some theatre sports. It’s not a theory seminar and you won’t need to sit down for 4 hours and write notes. You won’t be running laps but you will be asked to get up on your feet and get involved in a range of activities so bring clothes you can move in easily and comfortably and sports shoes if you have them. Also bring a water bottle and something warm to wear.
