There’s a discussion about accents on the latest Gamer: the Podcasting cast: somniturne.com/gtp

One thing they mentioned on there that I’ve always wanted but never gotten around to finding is a resource where you can listen to accents from around the world. Here it is:

I plan to use it to try to talk along and learn some accents, I reckon that would be really handy for larp.

There’s some freaking weird accents on there, especially South America and Eastern Europe.

But a few are disappointing. I couldn’t find a really thick Irish accent, they all sounded fairly mild compared to many Irish people I’ve run into and can hardly understand. In fact, some of the people sound a bit like they are showing off how “English” their English sounds.

Watch the Barclay English Premiereship Football, some of those commentators are as Irish as they can get.

Failing that you could always use the Sean Connery school of accents… :smiling_imp:

I’m a bit lost, are you guys talking about the real accents or about how they are represented in movies? Because in real life bloody Russians speak very differently from bloody Russians in movies, unless those bloody Russians in movies are played by real-life bloody Russians.
Or maybe it’s a thing only to be picked up by bloody Russians, and others are ok with it.
But I would guess it refers to any other accent as well.

Also the accents represented in movies are often the most stereotypical of a country. The Irish and English are the worst… the accents change drastically geographically there…
Note even here in NZ we have a range of accents… especially noticable across the North South divide.

I am SOOOO glad Sean Connery turned down the part of Gandalf in LOTR! WHat a disaster that would have been! What was Peter even thinking!

I remember seeing Patrick Duffy doing a New zealand accent on Love Boat.

As he said “I own a ranch in New Zealand”. It was sort of Texan, Australian and British all at once.

I have been assured by a linguist that New Zealand has the laziest accent in the world. In 100 years everyone one willsound like us. Til then we can all sound like Sean Connery.

If you want to hear real accents, you could always apply for a job at a large IT/Telecommunications company - the one I work for is like the UN!

Alternately call a few call centres - more of these are outsourced to overseas companies every year (as seen in recent Simpsons episodes) :wink:.

None of the accents I listened to seemed as thick as people I know. They definitely sound like people trying to do their best english rather than just speaking as it comes naturally.
