A Question from Sweden

This arrived in my inbox tonight. Does anyone know if the story is true, and if so, who the larpers in question might be?

[quote]Hello!

This might seem like a strange question but i have to ask it anyway. Im involved in the making of a public artwork in Stockholm, Sweden. One of the ideas we work on is the story about larpers from New Zealand, who on their way to a larp convention i Finland stopped by a fabric store in Stockholm. They bought fabric from which they made costumes for their extras roles in the Lord of the rings movie.

Can you confirm the story and if, do you know how i can come in contact with them?

Yours sincerely

Prima facie, it looks like a myth. Ngila Dickson and Richard Taylor got an Oscar for their costume design, I can’t see how they would have let extras bring their own costumes when they had the resources of Weta Workshop to draw on.

What is more likely is that these larpers turned up to the extras auditions in costume.

Either way, I’m not sure how you would find out who did this.

Weta made every single costume, every link of mail, every scale and every prop. They invented a new method of making chain mail from alkathene pipe. The people I know that were involved in the film didn’t have to supply anything but themselves.

I believe that many of the people who made armour for Weta were also extras in the big battles.

But Norman would be the best person to answer this, because he works there…
