A bad idea for a special effect

People who do programming are probably all familiar with Stack Overflow (basically a programming Q&A website), but you may or may not be aware of the related Roleplaying Games Q&A website. The reason I mention it is that someone asked there the other day about using a CO2 fire extinguisher to represent a breath weapon at a LARP. Turns out the consensus seems to be that it’s probably a bad idea, for safety reasons. Who knew?

I thought the more interesting part of the discussion was that people seemed to start discussing insurance implications quite quickly.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have any good ideas for a safe alternative?

Americans always talk about insurance. We have ACC, so we don’t need to.

As for other options, you can apparently make a prop “flamethrower” using a leafblower and paper streamers. But if you google for that now, you’ll see people making real flamethrowers by igniting cornflour. Which is also why you shouldn’t just throw a big cone of dust at people: because its explosive.
