10mm fibreglass rod - 2m lengths available

I’ve managed to source 10mm fibreglass rod in 2m lengths. I had to do a special order for ten lengths to get them.

So I have some extras available on a first come first dibs basis. They are $15 for a single 2m length. I have 6-7 spare at the moment.

You will need to pick up from Albany, I will not post them sorry.

EDIT: They’re pretty flexy at 2m, I’d recommend cutting them down to about 1.7m

At the risk of being obtuse, what are they best to be turned into?

Larp safe pole weapons (staves, poleaxes etc)

would be keen, will check the finances in the next couple fo weeks, so if there are still any left then i’ll put my hand up for one.

Would love some, but since you’re not posting them, where can I order them from?

I got them from RD1:

rd1.co.nz/contact-us/store-locator

They didn’t normally have them so they did a special order for me.

Hmmm… there’s one of them near me. I wonder…

How many did they need to get to justify the order?

Sweet, exactly what I wanted! Please put one aside for me. I’ll need to organise my ride to get there to pick it up, so I’ll check when it can be done. I can pay you either in cash on pick-up, or straight away by online banking, if you prefer the latter please give me your account number.

Yay, yay, yay, I’m gonna have a staff

Another option might be to use them in pairs, taped together into a single core?

Remember a standard door height is 2m, so it will get really annoying for you if your weapon is taller than that. I assume there needs to be some cushioning of the core at each end, which the 1.7m will allow for.
P.S. Derek can you sell the cores with a staff already made around it?

That’s a very good question

I had to get 10, but that may vary from store to store. You will have to try them and see.

If you’re wanting to do a 2m weapon, they also have 12mm rod that may come in 2m lengths, they may be more suitable. I didn’t want to do 2m weapons, so I was happy with 10mm.

I was thinking polearms and staffs, which should be longer rather than shorter, so maybe I’ll look at the 12mm. But having to get 10 at once is more than I personally need, unless we do a bulk order for Wellington people.

How good is this sort of thing?

Alternatively, what about having two cores that are ~1cm apart?

I noticed with my sword at Teonn it was a little too whippy for my liking, and I am wondering what alternative ways there are of doing the core.

No idea, I just remember paired cores being discussed somewhere for polearms.

Actually, I would quess that three narrow cores in a triangle would give the most rigidity.

I prefer not to do weapons on commission because most people want boring weapons and I mostly make them for the fun, not the money. I’ve just agreed to do a larp safe lute, because the idea appealed to me

I’ve run workshops where people came over and made staves and I may run another one in the new year.

EDIT: but you may want to have a chat with David Harrop. Maybe if you sprung for all the materials for a couple of staves, he’d be interested in them together and then you could both have one…

Use a sail batten instead of a rod. Sail battens are long and thin, so have excellent rigidity along the edge of the sword, which is what you strike with. They are less rigid on along the flat of the sword, but it doesn’t really matter.

You can get sail battens from Gourock in Rosebank Rd, Avondale.

I’d be keen for something like that. I haven’t got any larp polearms yet but I also don’t have any idea where to start in making one. Coming and learning though, I’m good at that.

Me too. I made a staff for my orc character for Chimera and while it looks ok from a distance, it was actually an epic failure and has big holes in the latex and stuff.

So I guess I’m saying if Derek’s willing to run a staff making workshop, I’ll put my hand up for one of those rods and bring/contribute to the other materials required for making something a bit fun with lots of reach.

I’ve already been asked to make several new weapons, and i don’t mind making standard weapons either. though lately been getting a lot of requests for stuff so i am going to have to start charging for work. price negotiable.
