My parents are VERY open minded, and I thank them for it =D. They’re not religious, though they don’t exclude the possibility of a god existing (which is a smart thing to do, you never know XD). And they allow me to make my own decisions, including faith… As long as I don’t become a criminal, or as long as it doesn’t ruin my future =D.
Yeah mine, gave me the leaflets from the church that highlighted all the demon stuff from D&D. My parents asked me if I was into any of this and I replied, no I was playing a different game entirely and I was off into town cos a new Slayer album had been released.
I think they just gave up at that point
When I was a teenager, we had a regular game at our place every Sunday night, and it could take a lot of time to shovel everyone out the door at the end, because everyone would be very excitedly relating stories and they’d kind of take up stations at the front door or the front gate or whatever. Then a policeman moved in next door. And he and his wife were nice, which I use in the sense of sober, straitlaced, and, it turned out when we later went over to babysit, with very noticeable Christian sensibilities. So my Mum looks out the window one evening, and sees this new neighbour standing at his gate looking worriedly at us rabble while we talk (noisily) about some kind of mayhem, and she makes a point of going out to speak to us and waving hi to him, so he know we’re supposed to be there. Good times!
On the other hand, I’ve been in a roleplaying group that was presumed by the neighbours to be a Christian cell group. The same group of people got together at the same time on a Sunday afternoon and spent 3 hours talking, week after week. What else could we be, right?
Were you playing a level 8 cleric?
Nope.
It is fascinating that for many Christians, their view of practicing wiccans is firmly based on the stereotypes prevalent during the Inquisition.
It is also interesting that pop-culture references to witches (Potter, Waverly Place et al) are similarly caricatured and unreflective of how wicca is actually practiced.
I can’t speak from direct experience, but I had a girlfriend who was a practicing witch, and I got to know some of her coven. Nice people who were intent on celebrating the changing seasons. Really, it wouldn’t make a very exciting roleplaying game. She also taught me a carpark spell, works every time
Carpark spell? As in, being able to park your car without crashing, or there always being a parking lot free? Or that it summons the parking lot to fight epic battle for you?
The second one. AFAIK there isn’t one to help you improve your driving, although I did read a wiccan book I which the writer asserted that casting protection spells on your car was a good idea.
Yeah, most of the Wiccans I know are pretty likeable people. I did use to know a guy who admired the ‘satanist’ movement (the Anton La Vey ‘selfish is good’ crowd) and thought he had some issues.
Karen Healey wrote a book called Shattered which is set in a small town where it turns out that Nefarious Supernatural Doings are going on, and one of the protagonist’s first reactions is that ‘but all the witches I know are nice!’
I’d like to know a spell or two =3.
Once again Derek I am amazed by your parenting. Those girls are going to be the most well-adjusted, broad-minded, intellectual kids I know of
We really only deal in pretend spells in these parts
Yes, but you’ve gotta stay adaptable, what if suddenly the pretent spells turn to real spells? I would like an advantage XD.
While I realise this is probably playful banter, let’s make it absolutely clear that the “magic” and “spells” used in larp are pretend gobbledegook and make no claims to “real” effect. Nobody undertakes larp with the expectation that we are providing “real magic” or that there is a chance that our lightening bolt spell really will start electrfying people.
If you are interested in the occult, or Wicca, or “real magic”, please research it in an appropriate forum. Your local library should have some good books. Here we’re in the business of playing pretend.
I know XD. (And the spells I meant were no-where near harmful =3)
And I wasn’t being serious =S.
