Paddywhack - March 2012 order

Thanks Ryan … I renewed my membership about a week ago, but haven’t heard back yet, so I’m not sure what my membership number is.

That’s cool, if your membership is being processed you can just say that.

Your membership number won’t change when you renew though.

Sweet, I’ll see if I can dig it out of my email then.
How can you calculate your poundage & draw?
Obviously the further you “pull back” the string, the more speed you’re going to get.
Your bow is one of these, right? Which makes it 15lbs at 24 inches.

Because the IDV arrows are longer than 24 inches, I’d like to get a measurement of the full draw, just so I know how careful I have to be.

Thanks. So basically, I thought the hitting power of that bow was okay but I wouldn’t like to see bows with a stronger draw than that at games. It packed plenty of punch and had good range, especially with the IDV arrows which lose less speed and height as they fly as they’re more aerodynamic.

I just realised I had put “25lb” for the Maelstrom bow limit at 28" draw, which was wrong. I’ve corrected my previous post now to read 30lb at 28" draw, which is what their site says.

I can’t seem to find the Lorien Trust draw/weight length, although I see people on forums saying it’s 30lb at 28" draw, and your bow sounds like it’s under that (slightly less weight at a slightly higher draw).

Curious Pastimes say 30lbs or less at full draw, which I actually think may be a better rule in some ways because people may accidentally over-draw if the arrow length allows it. So basically, an upper draw weight of 30lb seems okay to me, so long as the archer knows to draw it less at close range etc.
I teach people how to fire bows at different ranges at the Denfence of ~Somwhere that needs defending~ events. Including ‘plucking’ which allows you to essentially fire a blow at point blank if you need to. I however would encourage a point blank call for anything under 5ft (at my games at least  ) but obviously what people decide to do at their own games is up to them

You can get a neutonmeter and use that to draw- pull the arrow its full length and get a friend to read you the meter.

I was told to calculate my draw length to measure from sternum to horizontally outstretched touching fingertips. For me this equates to 22.5"

I went through one of Adam’s lesson at a St. Wolfgangs game. Quite an informative session actually.

Now, to see if I can get that bow at a good price… to see how many IDV arrows I can afford…

Righto, I’ve put my order in with my supplier but if you decide you want some IDV arrows now let me know and I’ll see if they can add them on.

Hey everyone,

The weapons & leatherworks have arrived. The arrows still are on their way - I’m getting a big box of them direct from IdV this time.

If you’ve made an order, please email me on ryanpaddywhack@gmail.com and let me know whether you’d like to pick it up from my place in Westmere, get it at Teonn (on the Saturday morning at the market), or have me sent it out to you and you can pay postage.

Unfortunately one item was missing from the order (I’ve let the customer know - if you haven’t been emailed it’s not you). I’m going to quickly bring in that missing item now, so if anyone wanted something else I may be able include it. You’d need to let me know today though, and I can’t be sure it’ll be here for Teonn.

Cheers,

Ryan

Most of the stock I brought in has already been bought up prior to the game, so unfortunately I will only have a few pieces there. No swords, as my last three have just sold. But I’ll still be coming to Teonn on Saturday morning with people’s orders, lots of arrows, a few leatherwork pieces (including a gorgeous scabbard) and a couple of daggers. So, this is just advance warning that there won’t be a lot.

Given the growth of the community and that I get requests for things I don’t have in stock throughout the year, I’m planning to move from taking two special orders per year (prior to each Teonn) to three. The third will be prior to Chimera. So if there’s something you want, there’s not too long to wait. I’d prefer not to move to carrying a lot of stock, because demand is still very unpredictable - but I will start stocking a bit more so that hopefully I’m not in this situation again.

Also, I’m planning to expand the range of items I stock. For one thing, with the growing popularity of archery I intend to bring in some larp longbows from IdV, the German company that supplies my arrows. The bows look like this:

These longbows are made specifically for larp. They come in 140cm and 120cm length (the latter is for smaller people), both of which have a draw weight of 27 pounds at 28 inches. That means we can be sure that they are appropriate for larp - it’s what they’re designed for. Furthermore, they are constructed with a core of fibreglass coated in a semi-rigid, rugged polyurethane foam that is resistant to impact, sun and damp. So they have a wood look, without the drawbacks of real wood, and will probably hurt less if you accidentally knock someone in the head with one.

One more thing about IdV - all of their non-consumable products (i.e. not the bowstrings) come with a 4 year guarantee. If something happens to your arrow head or the fletching, I will replace it no questions asked, and they’ll refund me or send me replacement stock. The only exceptions are if you stomp on the arrow shaft and break it, or set fire to it. Same goes for their bows. IdV’s kit is extremely durable, which is why they can afford to make this offer.

While the swords and daggers I have are great, sometimes people want different kinds of weapons or gear. For this reason I’m currently investigating a third supplier for axes, maces, throwing dagger, throwing axes, shields, and a variety of other larp kit.

So hopefully come early July I’ll be making up another order, with a wider range of products available, to be landed in NZ in August. I’ll advertise here on Diatribe when I’m taking the order and list what products are available. Because people sometimes miss these posts on Diatribe (and then miss the opportunity to order), I’ll also send out an email to people who’ve ordered from me in the past to let you know there’s another order being built. These emails will only be sent 3 times a year before each order, and of course anyone can ask to be removed from the recipient list for future emails.

As the community continues to grow, I hope that Paddywhack will continue to be able to supply a widening range of awesome larp gear to meet our needs.

Those bows look very cool  Any idea on price?

Sounds awesome!

I’m thinking around $110 for the bows. Which would be $88 with the 20% NZLARPS member discount. That price isn’t final, I’ll be looking at the exchange rate and shipping costs more closely before I take the next order.

Yeah, those bows are awesome. I would possibly be interested in one, depending on my funds situation.

Jon

FYI: the 30# @ 28" limit is the same as SCA combat, only the arrows and armour are different.

Well you’re welcome to get them for that purpose, but I imagine they might not fit as well with the whole living historical thing, being made from very modern materials.

IdV actually sell real arrows to be shot with these bows too, but I wasn’t intending to bring any in. Still, if anyone is into real archery and wants real 32 arrows (same as the larp ones, but with sharp metal heads instead of foam safety heads) I have no objection to importing a box. Naturally we wouldn’t want those anywhere near a larp event though. I can figure out pricing.
