“I think something to eat is a good idea, but I shall go and make a request of the cooks. No need to bother yourselves.”

With a bit of an effort Magnus hauls himself to his feat, favouring his left leg where the Demon Prince Dagon wounded him solidly with his giant sword.

“How is my daughter, Doctor? Is there any permanent damage to her spine? Any luck on determining who put the knife in her back?”
Helping the man to his feet with a supporting arm, “You can make any request you want of the cooks, but I think you’ll end up with cooks special, I believe todays offer is grey-brown, I hear tomorrow we have brown-grey to look forward to.”

His warm smile drops a little at the question about her spine. “We won’t know about permanent damage for a week or so, everything seems back in place, she’ll be in discomfort for a good while yet though.”

“Knife in the back, that’s a strange way to phrase it, I assumed it was one of the outsiders or from Campbell camp, is there more to it?” His gaze turned to Dahlia looking for a reaction.

Adjusting herself slightly so that the wound on her back wouldn’t sting as she thought about what happened, she replied "I was rushed at by a couple of men from Campbell camp. One tripped me and hit me on the ground with some form of blunt instrument, doing this " she pointed at the damage on her legs, “then another went behind me and drove a blade down my back. It could have been a knife or even a sword.”

She paused before adding thoughtfully “They even ran past many others in order to get to me. I think any fight I go in to, the red cross is some form of target”

Bastards Daniel thought to himself, is nothing sacred any more. “War does strange things to the way a man thinks Doc…Dahlia. I try to think they came to take our food, perhaps to feed those they care most about.” He paused to collect his thoughts.

“It’s easy enough to justify most things to yourself, especially when your family is starving. But.” He shook his head. “Well who knows these days, perhaps there was more to it, maybe they were driven by some darker power. Or maybe, maybe that’s what we have to look forward to more and more. Sometimes it feels like they’ve already won.”

His somber words weren’t helping, forcing a smile to his lips, “But they haven’t, not yet and there are plans afoot to do something about it. People haven’t been idle all this time just waiting for the end. We can take strength from that.”

Recalling what she heard the other night, Dahlia frowns a little. “I heard you are planning to go to the demon… citadel or whatever it was you called it”

She lowered her voice a little as to not let those nearby hear. “Daniel… are you sure this is wise? Almost half of the camp will be gone, leaving only a few able-bodied people here in case something happens. Heck, even I wouldn’t have able to fully cope around here without you”

“I did ask around, and other mentioned a Leo and Moss? In particular they said she ran the infirmary prior to leaving but was due to return from search or some such.”

“Perhaps if she does return she is another you can count on? Although I haven’t the faintest idea of her qualifications.”

Magnus shuffles a little to the side leaving the doctors grip and balancing himself on a nearby chair.

“If you aks me,” he says in a low voice “You are all mad to want to go anywhere near a demon citedel. You had enough trouble dealing with Dagon and his lieutenants. The citidel sounds like a place where worse horrors await.”

Dahlia had almost forgotten about Moss and Leo leaving briefly due to the recent events. She felt bad, since she realised she has missed Moss’s comfort during wee hours of the morning with patients. She’d probably even have felt better overall if Moss was around to keep her company. Moss even reminds her of her own mother, the kindness and care was strikingly similar.

“I agree, and I don’t want anything to happen to any of you either… If Dagon and a few of his demons did this” she gestured to the remnants of the mess of the day before, “imagine what going to the heart of it will do…”

Magnus nodded.

“It seems you would be substantially weakening the security of this camp. What prize awaits that is so worth the risk?”

“Word does get around a small camp like this doesn’t it.” Daniel sighed, “We need to make sure it doesn’t spread any further, certainly not to those who would want to stop what we have planned.”

“The Queens advisors have been working on a number of options to end this war, I’ve been charged with getting a group together to retrieve some information. In and out, everything being equal we’ll be gone for no more than a few hours.”

A tired look washed across his face, “We’re being sent to retrieve information, if I’m entirely honest I’m not certain exactly what, but my sources promise me that it’s dreadfully important, and the only place we’ll find it is on the other side. I’m being kept somewhat on a need to know basis, it’s probably safest for all involved.”

He slumped a little. “We lost too many people over the last few days, and the same thing is happening all over the world, if we don’t take steps there won’t be anyone left in this camp to defend.”

Straightening up a little he continues, “We’ll get one chance to get in and out unnoticed, it’s daring and they won’t be expecting it, but the demons won’t give us a second chance. The Queen herself suggested that some of the people here would be well suited for what lies ahead, from what I’ve seen so far she seems right.”

“it’s a volunteer mission, I can’t promise I’ll bring everyone back, but I’ll damn well make sure I give it my best.”

Kneeling down next to the bright haired woman, “You’ll be back up on your feet in no time, Ms Quigg will take somewhat longer I fear, I’ll have some time now that it’s quieter to prepare for the trip.” The euphemism bringing a wry smile to his lips.

“With some luck Leonard and Mrs Blake will be back soon and things can return to what I hear passes for normal around here.”

“I’ve not met the lady, a Romani from what I’ve been told. She seems well thought of and runs this Infirmary with a kindly hand, according to Nurse Blake, who’s opinion I trust.”

Waving his hand around the well stocked room, “I’m not sure where she managed to procure all these supplies from, but they were damn well appreciated over the past few days. I’ve heard the Gypsies have a talent for finding what they need, well there’s a lot of people here who should be darn grateful for that.”

“Yes I am very grateful to have them around. Not many take kindly to the Gypsies, but they are probably some of the best people to have around you” Dahlia smiled.

“In regards to your uh… trip” she added, “Please let me know if there is anything I can do. I’ve had my fair share of Demon fights, and even managed to avoid several fights in my time. I hope I can assist in ensuring you all come back in one piece”

“I suppose” she continued with a sigh, “that if the Queen is wanting it done, then it would probably be best that it goes through. I just hope she knows the magnitude of what could be lost if this fails”

Magnus looks sternly at his daughter

“I hope you don’t mean assist in the manner of followiing these foolhardy fellows? Who knows what awaits you, and especially that mark on your arm.”

He breathes out audibly, pausing a moment.

“I wont forbid you, the gods know you are to old for that, but I don’t want to see my only living kin throw herself into the mouth of hell.” he says with worry in his voice

With effort he lowers himself down on to the bed next to his daughter and places a hand behind her head, pushing her hair behind her ear.

“Please don’t cause this old man further worry, Dottir”

“At least think about this more.”

“You don’t have to worry, papa… I’m not going to go anywhere”

She looks up at Daniel, “but I think I should perhaps prepare some supplies for you all to take. Maybe even if I just make up some more things in the lab, like stronger relaxant, or even morphine. Just in case of course you should ever need it”. She lifts up her arm to show her demon scratch “Things like this are not that easy to shake off and ignore. At least at first. You’re going to need all the help you can get… and I don’t want anyone else to have to endure something like this”

She looks back at her father, hoping she reduced his worry.

Magnus’s face relaxes somewhat at his daughter coming to her senses.

“Good. Good.”

“Now this relaxant and the Morphium. I think I can handle that for you my daughter. You just stay in bed and rest. I can make those things in my sleep if only someone could show me to a suitably equipped lab.” he says with a smile.

“With those homunculi I imagine the opiat is in ready supply?”

“I have my own small supply somewhere on our ship. Locked up of course. I think the homunculi would rather not spare their own at a time like this…”

Looking at the two Doctor Swanhildes, “That would be most appreciated and there is a laboratory at the end of the corridor, Ms 74 seems to know her way around it, perhaps you could speak with her about both a larger supply of opium and access to the equipment.”

Thinking back on what she’d said a few minutes earlier about the Queen, “Yes I think the magnitude of what lies ahead for us isn’t lost on her Majesty. As I understand it she takes her responsibility to all her subjects with great seriousness. It’s not a position I would envy, or wish on anyone else.”

There weren’t too many letters today, she had time to indulge a little, nothing was stopping her after-all! Jane looked around to make sure no-one was watching and then stopped to stare at a tree. She grinned at it happily for a while. It was real! A real tree! Mentally she dubbed it “Favorite Tree; real.”

“I do not envy her majesty either, truly is the hardest reign any monarch has had to endure”.

Dahlia looks at her father “I will speak to 74 when I can. I’m sure she will have no problem letting you use the lab and the equipment. For now, perhaps we should just use my supply rather than bother her about it.”

She smiled, and added “She probably has enough to handle right now with all her list making”

Feeling her back, she questioned her colleague “When do you think I will be able to get up? I have no proper means of an estimation myself as I cannot see the wound. I would like to be on my feet as soon as I can”

Daniel sucked his teeth he knew what was coming doctors were the worst for taking medical advice, “A couple of days should do it,” Dahlia’s eyes lit up a grin on her lips, “Assuming of course you don’t mind potentially aggravating the injury with a reasonable chance of ending up paralysed.”

“With full bed rest I expect you’ll be up in a fortnight, perhaps ten days if you don’t move around too much during the next forty eight hours. Besides”, he added “If we’re going to conduct exploratory surgery on your arm you’ll be out of action whilst you recover from that.”

Dahlia’s heart sunk. Her stubbornness will have to lose this fight, she can’t risk being paralysed. And of course, how could she forget about her arm.

“When did you want to take a look at it?” she asked, her tone sadder than it was before.

“She wont budge Doctor. You have my word.” he says with a nod

“I’ll stay close by and keep you entertained my dear. Perhaps I’ll read you a few stories like I used to do? Or are you to old to be read to by your father?” he says teasingly.

When she mentions the arm he looks a little worried

“Perhaps this is something best left until after you have healed from your back injury. No need to overload the body, and wouldnt you say she needs all her strength Doctor?” He says looking expectingly at Dr Ashdown

“Never too old for a story. I might even tell you some of my own” she smiled
