“I know the basics, your friend who carries the hammer calls himself Thor, he’s one of the gods if I’m right?”
The Doctor’s forehead wrinkled slightly “So are you saying the Hellspawn in your country took the forms of creatures from Norse legends? Giants, elves, gods?”[/quote]
It felt weird having to explain something that was so deeply embedded in to her, but since it was not Daniel’s culture, she would have to explain in detail.
“there was a tale told to me when I was younger. I was born in to this world, filled with demons and just… unexplained creatures. I feel that perhaps mother and father wanted to prepare me for what I might encounter, but could only explain it using tales they already knew” she looked worryingly at her father, not wanting him to interrupt. He stayed quiet so she continued
"I worked alongside my mother tending to the wounded in our clinic, we lived above it. As early as 5 I was assisting her with treating patients. Naturally, child curiosity got the better of me and I asked questions. Questions like ‘why was this man’s arm torn off?’, ‘why are people being bitten and scratched then become sick?’ or ‘why is this man’s body having to be burnt?’. Heavy questions coming from a small child as you can imagine"
She paused as if for some response, but continued “I became a doctor at age 14 after formal training since age 12. It was an emergency law of sorts passed by the only University in my country. Children of doctor’s would become doctors, they were needed, and we were rewarded with qualifications” she smirked, motioning towards the ruined and burned degree she salvaged that now hung next to her bed.
“By then I had already seen every horror you could imagine. But the childhood tales remained, even after being forced by this hell to grow up early. Part of my mind remains a child. It’s that part that terrifies me” she frowned, grasping her father’s hand.
“But, enough about me, you want to know what legend I am talking about. Well, I guess the shortened explanation might be best. Around here we’re all very familiar with the undead because of all the Hellspawn. But in my country there are tales that precede long before any demon portal opened here. Mind you, these are just tales, but they are starting to ring true the more and more I see…”
She took a moment to think of how to phrase what she was about to say
“In nordic myth and tales, there are things called Draugar. They are pretty much what we would called “reanimated corpses”. But they are different to the ones you see. Much like demons, they are told to have the ability to take forms of beasts, even humans sometimes. And they are said to look more skeletal and ghoul-like than what we see.” She looked in to Daniel’s eyes “Blue. Their eyes are blue too, glowing even. They possess super-human strength, maintain intelligence of sorts, ability to use magic, pass through objects, scratch and tear limb from limb, and drive people mad at the sight of them.”
“It is said that they are immune to weapons, and that only a hero has the strength and courage needed to stand up to so formidable an opponent”
After a moment, she continued “But.” she sighed “You can’t physically kill one, only drive them back. That, is maybe why I never saw one after I had taken a swing at it in panic after it did this” and she moved her scarred arm a little
“I feel crazy” she sighed “But the blue eyes were unmistakable. Although I would like to think it is just my mind creating it since I tried to forget it. You’d think by 21 I would not believe in such stories”
Looking up at Daniel, she asked “Do you think I really saw it?”
