Historicaly Accurate...roleplaying

We are fantasy role play.

it is very, very hard to be historically inaccurate.

Many of the recent LARPS in Auckland aren’t really fantasy in the D&D sense. Ravenholme and St Wolfgang’s Vampire Hunters are both set in real history, with some supernatural aspects added.

I tend to call them ‘quasi-historical’

Makes sense.

In those sorts of larp I think it’s reasonable to ask what degree and type of historical “accuracy” is desirable.

Of course, everyone will have a different answer. And even if everyone agrees that they want high accuracy in a specific larp, there are special difficulties involved in trying to achieve consistent “historical” mannerisms in a larp:

  • research is required by players
  • it’s difficult to stick to mannerisms while improvising
  • there may be cultural restrictions that player won’t enjoy

But that’s not to say it can’t or shouldn’t be done. It’s harder than an anything-goes approach, but for some people the effort would probably be worth it.
