Generic Sewing Bees

Xcerus is right, due to not being organised enough, I’ve decided to cancel this Sunday’s event. I’m hoping to be able to co-ordinate with Zara and some others to acquire fabric next week, so we can do some work on the next proposed date. The committee approved $200 worth of society funds, and if we can throw in whatever we have spare in our fabric boxes as well, we’ll be able to make a lot of new kit. I’ve got a box of fabric I can’t use for anything and it’s really not great fabric but I’m hoping to make some new zombie rags and some patchwork tunics out of them rather than let them go to waste.

We’re going to need the advice of our resident sewing whizzes, like Zara and Moo, to make most effective and efficient use of our fabric resources.

I was thinking if you want some more upmarket gear, then some braids / ribbon would be good to sew around the neckline (for example). If you happen to see some in your shopping endeavours … I recall Dave’s emporium at Wairau Park (next to Lighting Direct) had a few authenitc looking woven cotton patterned ribbons. Or perhaps you can call in on Zanni at Geoffs.

Also all material at the Goldmine - on Morningside Drive near St Lukes, is $5/m.

Wairau Park is John’s Emporium but you’re right about the location.

Oh, and if anyone sees the giant ad in the paper for “clearance designer fabrics and draperies, also premade curtains” blah blah blah, on Rosebank Rd, ignore it for this purpose. There was a fair amount of fabric, inc some nice lace fabrics and velvets with sequins and stuff on for about $20 pm but i didn’t see anything useful (or cheap enuff) for us.

Is this a good deal? trademe.co.nz/Crafts/Fabric/ … 955007.htm

$1/m is super super cheap, even if the colour is a bit dodgy. If we still needed to make black robes for Mordavia I’d suggest snapping it up. Do you have a use for lots of black fabric?

Soaking in cold water with vinegar before washing usually helps to keep colors from bleeding/running/fading. Wish I’d remembered that when I washed my last pair of jeans for the first time…

Zara says that the black dye will not hold. Also we already have alot of black the only need for this is if we start making crew leggings / trousers… everything else we have black in abudance of. (Plus she saw this a while ago :stuck_out_tongue:)

For the look unless you want worn looking garments its not worth the time to sew it if the fabric is going to degrade so quickly.

Thank Adam/Zara, I thought it looked dodgy which is why I wanted to check with someone who’d know.

Higher quality material like this that is unlikly to rip is perfect for trousers / surcotes / shirts / dresses etc - anything you want to be hardwearing.

How about this stuff?
