as a seamstress have you considered looking at a treadle machine the grunt is only limited by your needle strength and and leg strength, no motors to seize up, you just have to be more careful of your hands because you can sew through a hand/ break a bone

Now that is an intriguing thought, my mother may have still lurking that should theoretically still work. Do standard sewing machine shops/repairers have those needles, or where?

yep and you can find them for about $150… the needles are just like any other needle and most shops will repair them… I like to stick with the singer ones because singer hasn’t changed any of their parts thus if something breaks you can most likely find them… I use my treadle whenever I’m making corsets or such in which I have to sew through 5 tough materials at once, sometimes one of them being leather.
