Brass for armour and mask
Just a thought…

I have a few brass braclets and they tend to turn my skin green if I wear them too long. Dunno if the metal you’re being advised to use would do the same, but just be careful. As I imagine it’ll get really gross and sweaty under that mask I’d worry that’d contribute to the ‘greening’ of your skin.
I thought that was copper that did that? Does brass do that too?

Brass can as its a copper based alloy, but it does it LESS than copper. My recomendation is still back it with fabric.

Yay, Useful Science Tricks!

Have you thought of making it out of papier or silk mache and spray painting it gold? I know a paper mask doesn’t have the oomph of metal, but it would be a lot lighter, quicker to make, and, if you didn’t like the way it looked, much less heart-breaking to do over.

Later, if you really liked the mask, you could use it as a pattern.

Well, for some reason I want to get as close to real as possible, atleast for my own gear. It just doesnt cut it for me to have a paper mask and just have it look real, even if there was no difference visible at all, I would still not want it (I am picky that way =/) So as I said before… I think, in this thread, if its not possible or feasible then I would rather not do it at all.

Really? Wow I cheat as much as possible, I’ve got some armour which is really light and looks a pretty fair approximation of the real thing.

I’d have honestly thought if you could make a mask out of paper that looked like brass that would be perfect, much better than a heavy solid lump pulling on your neck all weekend. You can do some amazing effects with spray paint. I wouldn’t dismiss the ideas people are offering so quickly.

Yeah, I’m sure you can find a plastic mask for $5-$10 and a can of really glossy gold spray paint at spotlight for $15 and get a better result than you will out of metal.

The movie business fakes armour out of all kind of things and it’s good enough for block buster films.

'S cool. I, too, like having nice things. And this discussion has interesting techniques coming up. Mock-ups to check the fit and look are still a good idea, though. Good luck!

by the by, make sure you make it safe too. I remember Mikes copper armour that left him with huge lacerations across his shoulders from the edges.

Its not only about looks in my opinion XD.

Anyway, good advice, about the safeness.
Anyway, I will see what I will do, thanks for all your help people =D.

Where would one find brass sheets? I live on the East Cape, so Gisborne (2 hrs drive) is the closest city. :unamused:

I’d open up the yellow pages and use the telephone to find somewhere. Metal merchants are still pretty low tech when it comes to websites and phoning around is still the best way to deal with them. They’ll want to know thickness (probably 1.2mm or 1.6mm for what you want) and dimensions.

They will be able to courier it out to you anywhere in NZ.

Will do. Thanks Derek. 8)
