Big Question

yeah we know that works. even acting the full drawback of the bow you can crank out a fair amount of shots. and the fact you’re throwing the arrow means your range isn’t excessive like it could be if you used an actual bow

Bows scare the crap out of me. I’ve seen pictures of larpsafe arrows but I’ve never played with them. We use 30# @ 28" for SCA combat with rubber blunts and those puppies will leave a bruise through denium at 20m no problems.

I’m aware that the larp arrows have special built up heads, but I’ve just seen too many arrows break to feel safe around them without eye protection. Heck, full head protection.

Does anyone in Auckland have any of the commercially manufactured larp arrows I could have a look at?

It’s a German manufactor and his arrows and bolts are very safe. He gives a live time warranty and for the new alternative arrows a three year warranty. But it deposite to the price. If you want, we can take an arrow with us and show them.

I’ve seen the pictures, I’ve just never seen them in action…

Some people don’t use them, because the arrow head fits to the eyehole. But I never had problems with them. Head shots are very rare, and normally you don’t aim for the head…

We bring one along to NZ in March/April. So we only need a larp-bow and a place to shoot…

I only got hit in the eye once at the gathering my own stupid fault too. I was charging a group of archers and lowered my shield just a little short and bang. Hit in the eye. Felt like being poleaxed taken off my feat because i was charging. Being hit otherwise is okay. the arrow didnt actually hurt because it was so well padded. But i did get a black eye. I think a spell ball probably has as much likelihood of injuring you if you get it in the eye.

I had a similar experience years ago at an SCA event sharged an girl weilging a halberd and got hit in the thrat and taken off my feet.

I am a lot more cautious now.

The tailed spellball, while not as nice looking is safe & cheap, shots are limited by your throwing arm (but how many people would use them successfully at range anyways?). Injury likely from spell ball is branding, which would be illegal anyways but accidents do happen.
I foresee most ranged combat to be in the thrown range anyways & you wouldn’t ever have to worry about broken arrows or punch through… ever.
A silver balloon, loosely stuffed with rice, a black cloth ribbon tail at 90cm long, with a large knot tied in the opposite end, which could have feathers attached for fletching is a bloody good alternative I think.
