An Epic Greek LARP

Thanks –

I’ve put the photos in a secret place for the organisers only, and they’ll post the link if they want the rest of you to see it

I’m really amping to play a game on that little green patch of paradise. I reckon the venue would be half the appeal.

There’s a good chance you’d be able to get permission & a key to access the building. If not, permission to take a port-a-loo over should be possible.

It’s the getting over that could be tricky.

Maybe get a request for access to come from NZLARPS, might sound more official? Or not. We’re not incorporated yet… but can always say ‘in the process of’. Anyway, in my short experience, New Zealanders - both private individuals and government - are wonderfully accommodating and helpful. In the UK you’d have no chance, but here it may well be possible.

If the game does get run on an island, then Poseidon, ruler of the sea, might be an appropriate choice.

That way you have all three brothers: Hades of the underworld, Zeus of the sky, and Poseidon of the sea. The universe is divided between the three of them. Kind of an interesting symmetry.

Again, if this was set on an island, would the mythical Isles of the Blessed (or Fortunate Isles, where fortunate mortals are received by the gods) be appropriate? I get the impression that this is sometimes seen as a kind of heaven (which confuses it with the Elysian Fields in the underworld), but that connotation could be played down. Anyone know where the Blessed Isles are mentioned in source material?

I’m coming across some interesting stuff while researching Hades. Again, can anyone recommend a short piece of source material that will let me see the original context? Especially stuff about Hades.

theoi.com/ is a pretty good online source.

That’s absolutely perfect.

It gives not only a description of the character, but relevant quotes from various original sources relating to all the events the character was involved in.

I’m favouring the “himation” for Hades, except that it looks rather like a toga and togas have taken a bit of a thrashing here as being “too Roman”. Apparently it’s period, but what do people reckon?

It’s the fourth costume design down.

Hmmm. I see what you mean. In that illustration, it looks clearly Greek, but that might be in conjunction with the effects of the hairstyle/beard of the figure.

A himation does look very Hades-like. I think I’ve always pictured Hades in a himation.

I think so long as you have no purprle stripe on it and have your left arm free, we’ll know it isn’t Roman.

(My concern about togas is that I’ve run into a frightening amount of people who think that Greeks wore togas and cannot make the distinction between the Roman and Greek societies.)

NZLARPS now has 4 shortswords from Paddywhack that you’ll be able to use at the Epic greek game.

Enjoy!

You’re trying to trick us, that’s the same sword four times

Sorry the Greek LARP hasn’t moved forward as fast as it could. I have been to China for work and next month I’m off to San Francisco and China again so I’m very busy!

I’m sure it will be twice as good for all the time you’ve had to think about it.

I had an idea for when this could be set. i figured it couldnt hurt to post my idea so here goes.

Troy didnt fall after the 10 years (feel free to come up why). however, it is destined to fall. Zeus has to some how arrange this. also, Aeneas has to be convinced to leave and go off to found Lavinium before he gets too old to travel. other interesting things could be odysseus who has to get home in another 10 years but has a completely different odyssey to the conventional one. this also allows for some other heroes to still be alive or dead, which could have resulted in the lack of distruction of Troy. also, some of the Gods may have changed their allegances.

just a thought

We already have 1,000,000 ideas for the plot for this game. The problem is mostly venue. We want to hold it in summer (so we all have “Greek God” tans) and somewhere that’s a bit Greek-ish.

Elysian Feilds, Asphodel feilds or Tartarus? Which part will you be using? Hades was the god, not the place.

Weapons should be in the greek style, or as appropriate for that period. NO cutlasses & rapiers.
Is a Sheild allowed to be used as a weapon? It was common practice then. What about Bows?

Half-gods -
Demi gods.

I wanna be Hades and rule over the land of the dead characters! Ebony throne, sceptre.
Scepter? Not likely.

Hades was dicked quite nicely in his share. Your magic weapon? A helm of invisibility. Your “Subjects” are essentially a bunch of convicts. Hades’ job was to organise where the souls went after they were delivered, and make sure they stayed there. It was more a Prison guard’s job than a God’s. Oh, and he only gets nookie six months of the year. That one is -not- a happy camper…
Mortals who sacrafice wine, olives and grapes would of course be more likely to get their prayers answered…
… By no-one, sans the Wine.

These are bloody times, my friends. These are the old gods. Blood, burnt meat offerings, and Wine are generally the only accepted offering. A white ram or bull was Sacrificed to the ‘high’ or ‘Olympian’ gods (Not Hades is not inculded among them) or a black ram/bull was sacrificed in a Ditch for the Cythonic gods (Enter Hades and Dark Persephone here)

Prayers are generally along the lines of “Oh Gods, please give me this…”
He had a weakness for women as well.
Incorrect. In true Greek fashion, he was mostly Bisexual. If anything, he had a weakness for -men- before he was married, (think Patroclos) and was Hithero faithful to his intended bride Bresies before he died.
It’s GREEK dude they haven’t invented homophobes yet!
Also Incorrect. Homosexuality was frowned upon in ancient times as well. The practice of Bisexuality was common for two reasons:

1: Men had to be good in bed

2: Female citizens had to remain virgins

Therefore, a young boy had to have a tutor to teach him the arts of love before he was married. This was usually in the form of an older man, who then disappeared from the picture once said young boy was married. If a man -chose- to remain with men, it was either done discretely, and he was provided with a wife -anyway- so that he could provide himself an Hier. The reason it was disapproved of is because it did not furthur the species. A bisexual man was accepted, because he could still have sons with his wife.
Can I be Bacchus?

R
Dionysos. Bacchus is a Roman god.

Really good asthetically, but alas, incorrect.

Ares’ upper breastplate was not included in Linothorax, the shape and style of and the shoulder plates are incorrect. As a god, I concede Areas may have had Vambraces, but these were not common amongst the Common man, usually reserved for Lords and Tyrants, due to the huge cost.
