Including freight? Right, that probably excludes getting two suits in the same package then. But I can probably still get away with a haubergeon and coif.
That is landed cost Idiot. So yeah includes freight.
They may slap you for duty. Ive had stuff like this come in as apparel which is an extra 10%.
But if you get it landed for under 400 NZD you will be sweet as
Ask and you shall receive. They were far too bulky to make the actual chainmail pattern, so I attached rings to the straps of her top, then linked them across front and back and hung strings of glowsticks from it. Then we randomly connected a few so they didn’t swing completely free like those 70’s bead curtains and connected front to back. Including the back, that’s 100 glowsticks right there.
The result is a little messy and looked a lot better irl than in this fuzzy photo taken in the one corner of the kitchen where I could find a light level that would work without flash.
She got costume prizes from three separate teachers, so I guess it looked pretty good at the disco.
/end thread hijack, we now return you to your original programming
Awesome
You put her in a cupboard!
Shhhh. Don’t tell CYPS.
This I can actually get in on, as I am currently making a long sleeve chainmail shirt for Ants (which will be finished by November)
Now, I’m not saying that I can make them cheaper than some of the websites, but I can make shirts, coifs, and other things people may want (within reason).
And I’m willing to provide maintenance if they get damaged. As long as I can get to where a game is being held, I will be there with replacement rings and pliers, ready to patch any holes or damage that has occured
Would people be interested in paying someone in NZ, who has an interest in the local LARP community (and is looking at trying to get into Teonn at some point), to make chainmail shirts, coifs and other such gear for them, who can also repair and modify it, as opposed to paying someone from overseas?
And in regards to shipping chainmail in from overseas - You are going to get hit, trust me. I order in a lot of rings and if it is over $400, NZ Customs charge you for it, and it comes in listed as metal, or in one case - jewellery supplies.
I’m certainly interested in chainmail…
But yeah, cost is a factor. If you can do one for a bit more than these ones online, then I’d rather buy local.
But they are a lot of work… As I’m sure you know.

I looked at shipping rings in to make my own, and it would have ended up costing about the same, plus my time as well (which would be considerable in the case of a shirt). But its not difficult to make (required tools: two pairs of needlenose pliers from the $2 shop), and if you have a lot of time, its worth a go.
(I did an open-face coif last year, which I’ve been meaning to add to sometime. The rings came from TradeMe as jewellry supplies. It was good fun, but it would lose rings whenever I used it, and patching the stuff is a bitch).
…id hate to see a close faced coif…

More that it wasn’t closed under the chin to protect the throat and neck.
ahh thats a bit more sensical
Arrived after a mere 8 days in shipping. Fits with room to spare, and the coif has a nice Bishop’s mantle on it which covers the shoulders. And it has a bag of spare rings and rivets in case you need to patch. Photos later this evening in the place where Iput such things.
what also may be worth mentioning with butted (not riveted) chain is that youll find the links under your armpits may break apart very quickly with use, this is because its an area that is often pulling and stretching with use and often commercial made/bought chain wont have the neccesary “diamonds” of chain under the arm pits(recently had this issue with a shirt of high tensile steel chain i ordered…not a massive deal but the arm pits of the shirt are a bit shall we say “religious” now) so if you really want to future proof maille brynnies/hauberks putting a diamond of chain in the arm pits. the elbows are another spot this can happen but to a much lesser degree not sure if this happens with aluminium chain or not maybe those that own a set can confirm if its the case (i can only imagine aluminium being lighter is more likely to stretch so i imagine it is)
Thanks for pointing this out, I actually had no idea how much wear and tear went into those areas. Looks like I may want to look at adding in some rubber rings in those areas to help with the stretch
For those who are more into DIY and less into realism, I recently saw a handbag from the USA that was made out of aluminium tear-tabs from softdrink cans, which looked very much like chain mail armour. I may even look at making some of this up at Tangleball at some time. It takes a heck of a lot of tear-tabs though!
