LARPing 101, help

Hi all, I have been awol for some time but have recently come back.
Sorry if I left anyone hanging with my sudden departure.

While I was away a dedicated group started running more MilSim, less speedball type games.
I would like to give them a brief lesson on proper role playing.

eg. How to stay in character,
how to break character without disruption the situation
safe contact procedures, eg if you have to strike someone

I saw bad role playing at a game and though , we can do so much better.

It would go something like this
.A quick lesson on LARPing basics
.Some practice time.
.Into the game with you evaluating each team’s performance.
.End of the day debrief.

What I would like is a couple of the pros from NZLARPS to drop in and show us how’s it done.
2 would be the minimum, more would make for a more immersive simulation.
Perhaps look over our game plan to maximise larping potential.

No charge to any larpers.
You will have a chance to commender weapons.

Looking at beginning of Aug.
If that is too busy due to Chimera then we can wait for another time.

Hopefully once they have the basics we can plan longer, more interactive games.

I wouldnt mind helping out

Keep us posted, maestro!

Love to come along to some of the milsims and would be willing to help.

Cool,
Date and location set.

Sat 7th Aug at our Helensville field, H3.
First of the two Helensville in this thread.

More info to come.

Cameron joined us for our initial planning meet.

Due to limited daylight hours I could not fit in a LARP tutorial at the start of the day as I wanted.
We will have to go with the “Lead by example” mantra
Once they see how role playing is done properly, hopefully they will want o lift their game.

As i said in the other (wrong) thread.

Went to the planning meeting a few days back. A one day event. Looks to have actual plot. It’s gonna be held just a little north of auckland so alot closer. They’re keen to get some larpers along.

Encouraged them to give more background to certain goals so that they are more than a “Capture the flag” mission with a different shaped flag. And to encorperate social tactics as well as military ones.

Alright, I’m keen. I’m overseas for the next few weeks, so if someone could email me the deets that’d be really great. It’s hello@craigneilson.com

Note to self: organise transport before 2am on the day. Soz guys, I’m out. Big-keen for moar.

Thanks for joining us Gaffy.

You are one hard man. :open_mouth:
Trackies and a cotton shirt.
Soaked from start to finish and then some.

Crikey! Got photos or anything?

Hey Cameron, have you changed number/email address…?

A little late but here is the After Action Report.

Looking at the weather and early start time I was not expecting many volunteers or any.
Thankfully Gaffy show up flying the NZLARPS flag.
With the 4 reserves I call up the village was 5 strong.

It was our 3rd try at incorporating LARP into a game.
First two times were in a limited capacity.
This time they had more autonomy and the potential to turn the game completely.

I think in future, to give the LARPers a proper experience.
We would basically write most of the airsofters as NPCs.

The village chief, Hong, may have been drinking too much of the witch doctor medicine with his IC erratic behaviour.

Some comments from the day
"I dont believe the Larpers were a failure I believe they made this game what it was. In my view this the what milsim is really about, not a list of 10 objectives in a static environment where largely actions do not have reactions. But an ever changing environment where thinking and evaluation of what is going on has a tremendous importance."

“Free form gaming is proving very interesting for me. It is simpler for the organisers who can focus on props, characters and “world creation” and allows teams to get out of it what they want.”

“What village? it was an Asylum for the criminally insane”
